A blurb in the Wikipedia article on the Class 313s says that in winter time, the saloons can be heated by passing air across the rheostatic brakes and feeding it into the saloon. Has this ever been tried on LU stock?

Has this ever been tried on LU stock? No. Too risky with all the tunnel dust etc. If the fans start up on 95TS after a period out of use, sometimes dust is drawn into the saloon and the punters think the train is on fire! There have been some false alarms like that.

In all the years I've travelled on Cl313's,I think I've only ever been on one train where the rheo brake was working!!!

I know that Silverlink certainly run theirs with the rheostatic brake cut out...

On the 95's, where a train is braking, and another is not near enough to warrant power back in the conductor rail (known as regenerative braking) the same principle is used as the rheostatic brake, with the excess energy going through resistors, and to the atmosphere as heat. The above, in effect does happen but this heat is controlled, of a minimum amount and not in passenger areas.

Indeed, I have seen this in action, and it actually makes stations have a smoky aroma to them too - the difference between Northern platforms and others at an interchange can be very surprising.
