All three cars of the unit were 'wrapped' in corporate livery vinyls but only trailer 17008 was actually given a refurb, although end windows were cut into the other cars. The work was done at Acton Works.
Went to Acton 15/3/99. Returned to Ealing Common 27/11/01. In service 17/7/02.
No rush then ... ;D ;D

Futhermore, car 17008 remains the odd one out as despite the unit going through the refurb program proper at a later date, the internal changes made first time around were such that they couldn't be undone.

Is 17008 the D stock car where the lights look brighter?

Is 17008 the D stock car where the lights look brighter? Yes, 17008 has 14 Philips Master TL-D36W/865 tubes per side (28 in total) whereas all other D Stock trailers have 11 Philips Master TL-D58W/840 tubes per side (=24). Other differences from trial-refurb: - all the draught screens and handrails have been retained as pre-refurb. So the long handrail fitted to all other cars by the wheelchair space is not provided. - Handrails down from the ceiling are off-white to the horizontal portions, other refurbs are all green. - The wheelchair space is in a different position to corresponding cars. - In contrast to other refubs most internal surfaces, side panels, window surrounds (polished aluminium on others), new advertisement holder flaps, are in off-white. The only blue/grey panels are the new door surrounds, which eliminate the door buttons. - Many seats retain the shaped look they had before, although in the now standard blue/green moquette. The transverse seats retain the fixed back, tilting bottom cushions of it's trial refurb. - Emergency handles have now been made standard. - The internal dot-matrix indicators have been made to standardise the fleet.

What are the "special" interior features on 17008? I took a couple of *very* quick snaps of 17008 when I happened to stumble across it at Earl's Court a couple of months ago. The lighting is horrible - gives me a headache in no time. The fittings just don't look good either, curves at funny angles, etc. Here and here

I can imagine those low handrails by the doors being quite a nuisance for people standing there leaning on the glass partitions. Thanks for the pics by the way.

Isn't one of the prototype cars used on the BBC's EastEnders set? The one I'm referring to still has the original door buttons on display and the dot-matrix indicator is different. It features in this 'secret scene' - the door buttons can't be seen but the DMI can, displaying an unofficial message!

That would be a mock up or replica. All the real D78 cars are still on the District line - so far! Certainly the Beeb had some bits and pieces salvaged from pre-refurb handed over to help with their studio set. I don't know whether there was any money the other way.

I've not been on it since the day Metronet handed it back to LU on completion of the second 'refurb' to make it work with the refurb fleet. There were some that day who thought it looked better than the standard refurb, including a specialist group at Bombardier who had the interesting one off job. All the odd angles and curves are from the trial refurb and just retained.

I really liked that trial refurb. It is far more dynamic than the actual fleet refurb. The draught screens were especially pleasing. The bit I dislike about the fleet refurb was the transverse seats looked too sharp.

I remember seeing the 3 car train refurb at Earl's Court many times and getting angry at the fact that it was always going to Ealing Broadway or Richmond and never Wimbledon.

I better look out for that one. It would certainly be interesting to look at the differences between that unit and others.
