Something that occured to me yesterday was that some A stock trailers have had the sleet brushes removed from the bogies. I noticed 6112 because I have a model of it and I added the sleet brush on as the photo below shows. www.flickr.com/photos/24772733@N05/4625209000/in/set-72157606546830412However, on Sunday I was lucky enough to see 6112 without its brush! Can anyone explain??

Probably as simple as a quick bogie change or similar. At this point, they're keeping the trains in service but not necessarily paying attention to detail - so any bogie and/or equipment was probably good enough for the job in hand if you see what I mean.
I don't think there is any sort of project to remove the brushes or any other equipment.

I don't think there is any sort of project to remove the brushes or any other equipment. Sleet brushes are on the leading DM bogies of all outer end DMs, not just the de-icing units. It's common practice to remove them in summer for reconditioning. Obviously some may never need to be refitted this year The beam on the de-icing trailer carries the dispensing nozzle and pipe. The other bogie has an insulating bracket with a sensor to detect which side the positive rail is on, to control valves so that fluid is only dispensed on to the conductor rail side. Quite possible the beam is off for reconditioning or as suggested, the unit may be gone before de-icing needed again.

Is the beam triangular? I thought that carried a little brush? I'm sure 5112-5113 will make it through the Winter!

I'm sure 5112-5113 will make it through the Winter! No they won't. They'll be gone next week. (You will be aware of my current run of egg-on-face. Cheques in the usual brown envelopes )

Is the beam triangular? I thought that carried a little brush? That triangular bracket carries the rail sensor, not a brush. These sensors replaced earlier ones around motor car shoe leads that could only detect correctly when motoring, so it wouldn't dispense when coasting and braking nor when ice was so bad that motoring stopped!

So, who is really no longer cutting the mustard? It's time to vote for the weakest link. But which link in the A Stock tree will it be? 5112 and what?

Bumb. Saw 5112 tonight coupled to 5024. The bogies on 6112 are interesting to note. The shoe beam on the 'D' end of the bogie does not have a dispensing pipe on and the 'A' end bogie does not have the sensor on. In fact the bogie has 'KEEP' on it, which makes me think that it is from a scrapped train? Therefore I would suggest that 5112 is no longer a de-icing unit!
