Good evening,
I'd like to share with you the 'beginning' of my boxfile LT Layout - this is being constructed partly as a diorama competition and also in an attempt to improve my own modelling skills.
An early idea I had would be for the diorama to be actually operable - despite limited space, I first settled on South Acton for the location however a quick study saw the boxfile had neither the spare nor height for such an endeavour - on keeping this theme I decided to make a 'fictional' location.
Being a Fulham boy, born & bred this boxfile is called 'South Hurlingham' a fictional branch off of the District serving originally wharves or some other interchange with river traffic. Latterly electrified the branch has a meagre service operated by a Shuttle service.
Initial tests showed the basic plan looked OK, there will be a half relief station on the upper level meanwhile the two tracks below will be part of the infrequently used yard. Today I have ordered a proper retaining wall for the layout and started work on cutting access into the boxfile for the upper level which will be operational.
Because I am using hornby set track, I am not sure if the 3rd & 4th rail placement looks right, its not been stuck down at all its just resting there on the sleepers for dramatic effect. ;D
The upperlevel is built from box card using a frame then with a horizontal and vertical piece added to form the arches location.
This picture shows my heaviest coach a Metropolitan all 3rd, made of brass tested it and there was no problems of the card buckling under the strain.
The yard is taking its inspiration from Lillie Bridge, itself not too far from the supposed location of this station - would it be prototypical for the yard to be tarmac/concreted over with the rails in tramway style or for normal ballasted sidings? As of yet I haven't decided on scenic breaks, the lower yard will also be operational however I need to find the drill to begin to cut a hole in the end of the box file and to tidy up the upper level access at the same time. Perhaps some sort of shed built in half relief and a shunters hut?
If anyone has any suggestions or criticisms please i'd like to hear them.
