I would be fascinated if any original plans still existed for any of the Central London Railway stations. Tottenham Court Road is especially interesting: was there a booking hall at street level leading to the lifts? Did the lifts descend into the circular area at the foor of the present escalators? Do any photos exist of the CLR station? The LT Museum Photo Collection seems to have many of the CCEHR station.

I think there might be some in the Plan Room at Acton - I've a vague memory of seeing something when I was looking for something else.

Tottenham Court Road Station originally had two entrances, one for the CLR and one for the CCE&H. The CLR building is now entrance F on the south side of Oxford St. There were two CLR lift Shafts and a spiral staircase - their usual setup. You walk through the base of one of them at the bottom of the 3 escalators going down to the intermediate level.
The CCEH also had 2 shafts + stairs. These were accessed from the existing (former CCEH) booking hall and were on the left as you approach the upper level of the 3 main escalators (3,4 & 5). The lower landing was at approximately the level of the two Northern Line escalators (1&2) but further east.
Each shaft had two lifts in it so, originally, there were 8 lifts at the station. The station was rebuilt with the escalators in 1926.

Thanks for that. Does anybody know, by the way, why the CCEH station was built without a surface station. Maybe all the available sites had been taken, but it seems an awful lot of work to hollow out the area underneath the road junction to create the station. Am I right in saying that, if a surface station had have been built, the positioning of the lifts would have meant building a station on the Centre Point side of Charing Cross Road?

Thanks for that. Does anybody know, by the way, why the CCEH station was built without a surface station. As far as I know, there was a surface station on the site of Nos 6-15 Oxford Street. That's what they did. The 1910 OS map shows the stairs from the street. Perhaps, but we'll never know. I suspect that the cost of land there was already prohibitive.

But wasn't 6-15 Oxford Street the CLR station? I was under the impression that the two stations were only linked by a Deep Level subway (possibly the one that is still there, albeit closed at the moment during the refurbishment) with an Interchange Ticket Office in it.

But wasn't 6-15 Oxford Street the CLR station? Yes, that's what I meant. I suspect you are correct.
