Ive always wondered why this: Signalhead is stuck in the ground at Chesham. I can see that the air main pipe goes underground at that point, is that somthing to do with it? Thanks

I believe it was something to do with the goods yard which obviously no longer exists.

I am fairly sure the goods yard wouldn't have had a signal like that. The only colour light signals at Chesham station were 3-aspect starters JV18 and JV16, two aspect inner home JV3 with a junction route indicator, and advance starter JV17 and its co-acting signal. All others were semaphore, most of them miniature, apart from JV20 from the loop which was a normal size semaphore.
I would suggest this signal head is the remains of a "training" facility, set up probably in the early days of Metronet, who established similar at other locations.
Any other suggestions folks?

I thought it was put up as part of a signaling [1] display in connection with some junketings that went on with the last revamp/repaint of the signalbox, might be wrong on this - could be singing the same tune as reg but from a slightly different point of view.
EDIT [1] ooops - I've been looking at too many Union Switch and Signal technical drawings of late. Please accept my apologies and insert the extra 'l'.

Was there not an old LT ritual of beheading troublesome signals after dark and Chesham was the last place that this ancient process was enacted ;D.

mrfs42: If it were to have been somthing to do with the repainting of the signal box, where would it have come from? @xercesfobe: ;D

If it didn't come from Chesham, which is unlikely, it could have come from anywhere where signalling had been changed or had been made redundant. The signal equipment store at Acton seems a possibility as there are plenty of 'spares' there (or certainly were some while ago).

Don't know. As I said, it could be from "anywhere".

I'm sure that, at one time, Chesham was famed for its station garden. Maybe, someone decided to attempt a nursery plantation of signals - regular watering, plus the careful application of fertiliser, could eventually produce full-height signals, to be transplanted to other parts of the network ....

I remember asking about this a few years ago. From memory, when the signal box closed there was a plan to open it as a museum or educational facility for school children, and this low-level signal head was part of that. I think H&S (something to do with proximity to electrified rails?) got in the way of the project getting completed. I'll see if I can find the old thread. edit: here is the thread from June 2006. It isn't quite as long as I remember, so perhaps it's been discussed elsewhere as well. I've not found that thread, if it exists, though.

I suspect that it is an ex-Met. three aspect signal, US&S style.

It's not a 3-aspect... But it could be something else - wait a mo for me to cook AI her supper and I'll chase this up.
