I was at Paddington earlier this evening and after having just got back to London from a week away, I proceeded to walk to the Bakerloo platforms, and as I reached the platform, the doors of a southbound train closed just before me. As the train departed, I saw that the middle cab of the four car unit ( which was carriage 3344) had a red inner DM, and not white as almost all 1972TS which I have seen. I thought that all 1972TS four-car units were single ended? Or is it possible that the inner-DM was painted red by mistake? I would be grateful if someone could clarify..

Stephen I believe this was done to allow the unit to work on its own on the Network Rail section of the Bakerloo, as in order to comply with Railway Group Standards the train must have a red front end (which is a concession to the normal yellow front). I can't remember the exact details, but I think at least one unit was done to allow it to work between Stonebridge Park and Acton Works to drop off or collect 3-car units requiring work there. Of course the 72 stock used to work on the (then) BR section of the Bakerloo with unpainted ends, so not sure when this requirement came in.

3264 (i.e. 3364) is another, and I'm sure there is another, but the unit escapes me at the moment.

@andyjig:
Your probably thinking of the one that is painted in 'train red' rather than bus red. The colour applied to 38ts etc.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I have only just seen it again at a distance. It appeared to be a similar colour to the lampposts at Harrow and Wealdstone (a darkish red with a touch of blue).
38ts colour seems right.

Yep, that's the one. Whether the other one (3364) or two (number uncertain) have been similarly treated, I don't know - yet. 3344 and 3364 originally had half-red cab ends in the middle.
