Hey all
This weekend, there is no service from Harrow on the Hill to Aldgate.
From what I understand, this is due to work at Neasdon Depo and at Farringdon.
Unless there's works elsewhere, why can't TFL operate more of a service?
Could they operate a shuttle from Finchley road to BakerStreet? Lock the points out and have a train running shuttles on each track?

What's the point of operating a shuttle from Finchley Road to Baker Street? Doesn't the Jubilee line do exactly the same thing, apart from calling at a couple of intermediate stations along the way?

Thing is, there isn't really a crossover at Finchley Road for the Metropolitan line - it is at Swiss Cottage - around 500m south east of Finchley Road. Not only would this offer a very limited service, but only one platform would be in use, which would further limit the service. Having just read your last sentence, I don't think the Met is bidirectional, so running shuttle trains on each tracks may not be possible, however I understand your thinking. Furthermore, there's just not much point, as jswallow said, the Jubilee is a more suitable service.

Obviously the works at Farringdon are essential, but I can't help thinking there must be many summer tourists coming in on the Eurostar and also from the north of England whose first impression of London's transport is that the Sunday service is rubbish with no service at all from the SSR platforms. Why couldn't the Hammersmith & City operate a Hammersmith-King's Cross service?

Why couldn't the Hammersmith & City operate a Hammersmith-King's Cross service? Something to do with the wroks being carried out High St Ken-Edgeware Rd. But as they've had to close the central section due to Farringdon and Edgware Rd, they're taking the time the carry out upgrade works more generally on the line (from what I read anyway).

Except the Jubilee line is not running either... But the Jubilee Line IS running between West Hampstead and Stratford, which last time I checked did indeed cover Finchley Road - Baker Street. Don't forget that operating a shuttle service is more than simply providing a train and securing points etc. Are there any trip cock testers in the area? How will the trains be maintained during the closure, given that they won't be able to get back to depot during the closure? How many spare trains can you provide in case a unit or two goes defective/ vandalised and where do you store them? Will the trains provided for the shuttle service be available for the Monday peak service (I'm sure the Amersham commuter would be more than happy to have a few cancellations on Monday morning in order to provide a short shuttle service over the weekend)? What is the benefit of providing the shuttle service and what is the alternatives if you didn't operate the service.

Except the Jubilee line is not running either... It's not running from West Hampstead to Stanmore, but is south of there. So the Jub negates the usefulness of the shuttle service mentioned.
