An ex DSM friend of mine mentioned to me some time ago that the platforms at Euston Square station have a unique smell and have done for as long as he can remember, I have also noticed this smell on the occasions I have used the station, I cannot explain the smell at the moment but it isn't a bad smell just different, what is it and why is it there ? Anyone else had a whiff of it or are we unique ? Apologies if this has been mentioned before.

I used to use Euston Square quite a bit and on rainy days thought I caught the distinctive smell of damp soot. I liked to think it was the encrustations in the tunnel,of 100 years of steam operation...

It does have that seemingly unique aroma.... don't quite know what Chanel No5 would make of it... Don't forget, the rising water table and groundwater penetration might be having an effect, also road level drains and soak-aways might be contributing to this too!

If you stand in the right bit of the platforms at ES you can actually hear running water.

The 'damp soot' smell was prevalent on the sub surface lines right up until the mid seventies even on those sections where the LT panniers never ventured such as the southern part of the circle line. Over the years this gradually disappeared as the tunnels became cleaner. I would suggest that there is probably some building work going on in the vicinity that may have disturbed a disused part of the tunnel or allowed the ingress of water to the tunnel.

UCH was rebuilt totally over the last few years so maybe it was that?

Isn't it more to do with Circle line trains being required to test the Westinghouse brake at Euston Square? I've used the station lots of times, and it always smells of brake dust IMO. In dry weather, the air is thick with dust there too. You can see the dust in the air in this photo: www.flickr.com/photos/dh73/4287113629/

UCH was rebuilt totally over the last few years so maybe it was that? It was stinky in the mid-90s when I was at UCL. I think your suggestion, DavidH, is top. I'm going with that. (And yes, I have noticed that it's dustier than other stations.)

I thought it was just me when I got off a C stock to get on an S stock behind - and could barely see down the tunnel! Explains why now - the brake testing thanks!

Last year I spent 30 mins or so recording A-stock trains on a mini-disk recorder . By the time I left, my throat was dry and I was sneezing black dust for the next 24 hours. Got some good recordings though!

So now the Circle isn't actually continuous, does the Line Supplement still demand a Westinghouse test at Euston Square, or is this just 'old habits'? Watched a beautifully judged all Westinghouse stop by a C stock driver there the other day though.

So now the Circle isn't actually continuous, does the Line Supplement still demand a Westinghouse test at Euston Square, or is this just 'old habits'? Checked, yes it does. So a Hammersmith to Barking H&C doesn't need to test the Westinghouse brake at Euston Square but a Hammersmith to Edgware Road via Aldgate Circle train still does, as well as at Paddington, the last station before the end of the trip. Suppose this keeps it easy for when (if?) a 'round and round' Circle is operated.

The circular Circle has been operated during engineering works a few times.

With plenty of years experience between us we know It is not break dust (although that might add to the aroma), i think the suggestion of soot along with water ingress and dampness around the station make a lot of sense.
