D6 are 6.55m (21.48ft) shorter than an S7. D6 are 22.78m (74.73ft) shorter than an S8. So a degree of SDO would be required at some stations I'm sure.

Much as having "go anywhere" stock would have been a bonus on paper, in reality it would have been very unlikely to see a Met (S8) diverted onto the District. It would also be a waste of money making sure S8s could serve the District, given the rarity of such an event. S7s will be fully interchangeable between lines, meaning stock can easily be utilised as required - as currently happens with the C-stocks for the Wimbledon branch. This gives more than enough scope to still classify the S-stock as "go anywhere" stock. I don't want the odd Met S Stock diverted onto the District Line, I want the latter operated by S8s, not S7s. It would help compensate for the reduction in seats per car. But the S7 units will only have 12 seats less per train than the D78 stock that they are replacing. S8 units are considerably longer than the older 8 car district formations that ran on the District line in the past, so many stations would need rebuilding. There would still need to be S7 units on the western end of Hammersmith and City and Circle lines without spending even more on station rebuilds than is already being undertaken. Fitting S8 stock into Edgware Road would be an interesting and expensive project.

The 8 car District formations of old - R stock etc - were too long to open all the doors at some stations. Other station platforms were lengthened. So the Driver and Guard had to use End Doors Cut Out at quite a few stations. Since then, OPO has needed platform mounted CCTV arrays near the cab, so that's a bit of platform where S stock can't open a passenger door, at least until all old stock are gone and the platform monitors removed. Various signalling changes have been made since 8 car R stock days. The rules for signal sighting make things more difficult too. So expect a bit of SDO on quite a few stations along the Circle and District in Central London. Nearly all just one door at one end though except the very short platforms at Notting Hill Gate, Bayswater and Paddington.

I still think that S8s on the District should have been an aspiration to work towards though. The recent works at Blackfriars being a prime example of an opportunity for lengthening Assuming that Wimbledon-Edgware Road could operate with S7s along with the Circle service, then the only difficult works or SDO required would be the core section between St. James Park and Bromley-by-Bow (I think Gloucester Road and South Kensington have enough room, as does a few of the others en-route).

They should have done S8s on the District. The passenger numbers are probably far too high for S7!

We're having enough trouble getting the railway ready for S7 - it would be even worse for an S8!

Yes getting S8s on the District would be difficult. What bothers me is why the S stock were made so long. The NDMs are shorter than the A stock cars but the DMs are much longer. The cab is huge and there are 3 seats between the first vestibule and the cab bulk head. This may be due to the slide cab door and first door leaf clashing - not a problem the Met has had before!

Any update on when we are going to see the S7 stock arriving onto the Circle/Hammersmith & City lines? I'm getting impatient!

Any update on when we are going to see the S7 stock arriving onto the Circle/Hammersmith & City lines? I'm getting impatient! As only H&C I/Os have been trained so far and the main training doesn't start until "Spring" my guess would be May/June at the earliest on H&C.

You'll have to be patient on that front i'm afraid. We're working hard to get everything in place to ensure things are right to enable S7s to operate on the C&H. A lot is done, but there is still plenty to do.

Great pictures, prjb! Thanks so much, I wasn't expecting the S7s to kick off so early!
