Hello. I see these regularly. I think it has taken about two years of work so far at the Custom House station to get to this stage, maybe they will manage to cut the plastic off them by the end of the year.
I heard they were paid for by the Olympics because some things will be held in the Excel building there. Of course, the Custom House station is about to be all knocked down and rebuilt for the Crossrail, I don't know how these escalators fit in with that work or if they will have to be taken out again.
I do remember a few years ago when Selfridges shop in Oxford Street put in six floors of escalators over one weekend.

I hardly think since February of this year is two years. And they are planned to be open in September. They'll certainly be open by the World Travel Market in November. It's only the Crossrail station that is being rebuilt and will connect to the two walkways at either end of the DLR station.

Bear in mind that when working on an active railway, you are extremely limited on what you can do. You wouldn't want building materials to fall on to the tracks and derail a train. Also, at this site they can't even do any work in the 2 hours per night of system shutdown due to it being a residential area. The Western entrance had to be rebuilt first, along with the extensions for the 3 car project, otherwise the station would simply have been closed for the work to be carried out. Not particularly helpful for a major exhibition centre really. It does worry me that people keep thinking that you just drop ready-made new bits into the railway, plug them in then leave them. It isn't like buying a new kettle.

Never been escalators at Custom House DLR station before - these will be brand new and the first at this location.

Wouldn't it have made sense to have had the escalators at the other end on the new section? that seems less of a walk for people going to Excel.
Will Custom House station stay the same as it is now once Cross Rail work starts? from what I understood the entrance to the station will be in a totally different place across the road from the current site! (where a former pub now stands).

I don't quite understand what you mean by the other end of the new section, but if you are referring to the Western Exit then no they are the same distance from Excel it all depends on where you are on the train. But I would say that they should put escalators on that side of the station too and at Prince Regent.

I just thought the old exit would be subject to changes with Crossrail. Dan

The new escalators at Custom House station went into service last week . Less than a week later they have already packed up . There are signs up asking the public to use them as a walking stairway due to a fault. As each escalator cost over a million pound to install, one would have thought that they would have lasted a little bit longer than a week
