Units 5234/5110, have been marked down as the Met Heritage train. Both units will be keep in a worthy condition, and will be able (with the rat cars removed) to form the Met Heritage train. They will be providing RAT duties for many years to come, and the maintenance regime will ensure a core level of knowledge is kept in a60 train maintenance. got to keep the old girls rolling.

5110 has it's coupler removed, as demonstrated in your picture, has it been reattached?

Well this is all sounds like marvellous news. Thank you panniertank! Sounds good! This will mean that three cars of the first A60 in service (6008/9/5009) will be preserved as these are in unit 5234/5.

I would have rather seen 5124 saved, as the A62 stock was the first type of mainstream train on the tube to use reciprocating compressors (or so I believe).
Oh well, there are reasons, and we're not to question them.

Oh dear Mr Panniertank. I'm sorry to disappoint those who have swallowed your story, but your latest re-incarnation should really ask for the dosage to be decreased. Your hallucinations are a little on the extreme side this time. There may, at some point in the future, be a decision to keep some A-stock for "heritage" purposes. However, whilst there will be 2 RAT trains this autumn, the presence of either does not mean they will survive forever - if, that is, the RATs are formed of any of the units Mr Panniertank quotes. p.s. The leaf-fall plans (limited as they are) extend no further than December 2011. The S-stock is more than equipped to cope with poor rail conditions. The A60 RATs are being kept to assist the remaining A-stocks. So gainful employment beyond the end of the last leaf-fall season where A-stocks are run is, I'm afraid, doubtful.

Just a few pointers on Leaf Fall ...
This years plans only holds the requirement for one RAT, in terms of train paths. I presume the 2nd RAT discussed above will be available purely as a spare.
Oct - Dec 12 plans have been discussed and one option is to physcially path 2 RAT trains, both of which would be 'A' stock. Nothing near being finalised and won't be until well into next year, but interesting that a 2nd RAT has been put together!

The 2nd RAT is just a spare - last year especially the RAT was out of service a fair bit due to flatted wheels, something which - because of the nature of the train and the work it does - can become a very frequent occurance.
As I said, we're running RATs this year as there will still be A-stocks, and the S-stock hasn't had an autumn to prove itself yet. Once the S-stock is fully in, it may be that we continue to run the A-stock RATs. As you say, that time is still a fair way off (although rumour has it myself and a couple of colleagues will be given consulation with regard to the December 2012 WTT very soon.)

Surely it would be prudent to keep the RATs until after resignalling? Even if the S stock currently handles the line well with conventional signalling in autumn, the running characteristics will differ after ATO in some places, and the requirements for good adhesion will be a lot higher. Just would seem to be a useful insurance.
So how is the extra RAT being made, will another trailer undergo conversion then, or is it just the need for an extra unit for motive power?
