I found some gems on the LTM site showing the layout of the proposed Amersham Stock in the 1940s and 50s:

The 1950s surface stock was to be similar to the 1952 tube stock which was to be built for the Piccadilly Line. The body profile and seating was decided on car 17001 although the front end apparently was not!

In the end the A stock front was probably based on the R stock but of course without the skirt!

I love my A stock I do!

17000 and 17001 were both trailers, so the front end design was not an issue. That 1950s mock up looks very similar to the 1952 tube stock mockup
