A) Clapham North C) inset 2 is the Britannia estate/village/whatever near West Silvertown on the DLR. you can just make out the surviving cranes of the Victoria dock behind the buildings.
Using the consensus of the earlier answers I'd guess the link is points of the compass.

Damn! Yerkes beat me to the Gosport ferry answer. I can almost see it from where I am sat!

So is the link something to do with points of the compass? Or is that too straightforward (assuming we have correct locations!)?
e.g. a) Clapham North b) Southgate c) West Silvertown? d) Eastcote

Actually if it is West Silvertown then the middle "inset" may not be an inset at all.

Another vote for Eastcote on #4. I knew it was a Holden-esque station, but could not decide if it were on the Stanmore or Uxbridge branch.

4 is definitely Eastcote and I have a feeling 1 is oval.

and judging by the stock in picture two, it is somewhere on the Bakerloo line.

If you get extra points for IDing the ferry, it's either Gosport or Portsmouth Queen, the 1966-built twins. The latter is identifiable by having extra ballast tanks on the stern, but that's been cut off.

3 is either West Silvertown or Pontoon Dock, you cannot be sure from just the picture. Also the middle inset on the 3rd picture is Britannia Village on the Royal Victoria Dock, I believe.

Fairly much everything covered, only a single inset remaining in fact! Station A: Clapham North - view from Number 50 bus [Chris M] Station B: Southgate - northbound platform [Chris M] Station C: West Silvertown - bench on eastbound platform [Chris M] Inset 1: Gosport Ferry, Portsmouth Harbour [Chris M] Inset C2: Station D: Eastcote - view from east end of eastbound platform [Chris M] Link: These stations are named opposite to their position relative to central London. Clapham North - southernmost station with "North" in the name Southgte - northernmost station with "South" in the name West Silvertown - easternmost with "West" in the name Eastcote - westernmost with "East" in the name *All images have a clickable larger version*

Final inset is a Budd RDC, probably in the USA somewhere. A bit of googling says its on the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire - see www.hoborr.com
