...where were they seen other than the ELL and the Chesham shuttle? I presume the Chesham shuttle stabled somewhere further south overnight, did it run back down in service? And did four car A stocks ever get used either as a mistake, due to disruption, or anything else? (I think this message gives away which generation I'm in! )

Uncoupling was operated by A stock from about 1962-1981. This means that in during the slack hours and sundays, four trains were used.
Trains were stabled all over the place. Some in the city and others at sidings I would imagine.

My understanding was that for economy most units only had one cab equiped for one person operation so had to be couple "back to back" as 8 car units. Could these still operate as 4 car with a guard?

From personal observation and my growing collection of WTT's--there was one 8-car train stabled between the peaks in Platform 1 at Uxbridge. Additionally there were other inter-peak stablers at both Aldgate and Moorgate in the City. Rickmansworth was aso used as an inter-peak stabling site

I heard that the Chesham train was stored at Neasden overnight.

There was a 0536 Wembley Park - Chesham which was a 4-car set on the mainline, then forming the shuttle for the rest of day.
