Looks Like a Metropolitan Line A Stock train set number box blind to me.

Ive always thought the A stock number 'displays' were undernearth the hinged top of the offside cab, where they were just the enamel number cards?

It is SSL and I think that it is D78 pre-refurb. Looks familiar on my days with my dad going to the Bridge...

Just told Rob on MSN it can't be.
Overhaul date in '97.
Only SSL stock non-refurbed at that point, D stock.
Actually never mind, I'm talking out me rear. Looking at pictures, D stock appear to have had the flip-card numbers for quite some time, so is rather confusing.

It appears that there are 'handles' which suggest number 'blinds', in which case it was only the A Stock of current surface stock that had roller number blinds. C and D Stocks did not, pre-refurb or post-refurb!
Happy to be corrected with the right evidence ;D

The flipshots of the item prove blinds!
I just find it interesting however the colour of the box and the numbers on the blind, totally different to the A stock's pre-refurb colours!

Im pretty sure A's are number cards slotted into position. I had one the other day with an ancient white 4 and the other cards were day-glo green

It's from an A60 and not a D stock train.

That looks like a post refurb A60 box to me.
I've had to replace a number blind in them a few times when thrashing along the fast line. They are a right cow.
Pre refurb were worse because the wiring was shot and when you opened the number box to get to the winding mechanism it would be likely that the rotten wire to the lighting tube would either break or short out and blow a fuse.
Also the handle on the left in the picture controlled which number blind turned. These were never maintained and often failed to work.
A good idea but suffered from neglect.

The flip over numbered cards were much better!
But, that item is a bit expensive.

Right, from the horses mouth, so to speak, from a Met Line T/Op friend -
"I can confirm that the A60/62 stock uses blinds and not number plates. It is evident from the fact that they often get creased on the spool and end up (whatever the blind-equivalent is of) "cross-threaded" and mis-aligned.
The reason for the "ancient white 4" is simply that the 4 is always displayed and so the fluorescent pigment in the numeral "4" fades over time -- same as the BAKER ST and WATFORD particularly, on the older destination blinds".
