Hi everyone. Just after the opening of the new platform 3a at Stratford, I noticed all Train Ops following the same pattern. Drive into the station, stop, open both sets of doors, allow passengers to board/alight, close platform 3a doors, close platform 3, depart. However, now I am seeing some very unusual driving techniques. Many train ops open the doors onto platform 3/3a first, then leave a gap of 5-6 seconds before opening the doors onto the other platform. They also seem to talk us through everything, despite the fact that they didn't do this back in September and we may have needed to be told then but not now. And then when it comes to departing, 3 or 4 times out of ten, the doors have closed onto platform 3 first and then 3a, or both at the same time. Is this part of some new plan I don't know of to confuse passengers so much that once they hear the beeping noise, they don't dare try to get onto the train?

Nothings changed since 3a opened. We are meant to make a PA at Leyton to explain that the doors will open on both sides, left for the Jubilee, DLR, right for mainline etc (no mention of LO, don’t know why), at Stratford we open up both platforms together, let SONIA do her stuff, do a “Mind the doors”, close 3a, close 3 and off we go.
If anyone is doing differently then it’s unofficial.

It's not always deliberate. We still get problems with 3 and 3A where one side of doors may either delay or fail to open. Even with the PAs, people still whinge when they end up alighting on the wrong side, giving the usual "We weren't told where to get off," story. Nine times out of ten, you still get people who require step-free access on/off the platform on the wrong side. Nothings changed since 3a opened. The only reason I can think of as to why LO is not mentioned is because there is no direct access to it from either platform – it still requires a long walk down a set of stairs, down the subway (or if exiting onto 3A, down the stairs, through the concourse and down another set of stairs to access the subway) and then up a flight of stairs.

I’d imagine it’s because it used to be a “mainline” service run by Silverlink. LO is not that much further than platforms 8, 9 and 10. Does 10a still exist? I was one of first lot of LUL staff at Stratford when we took over in May 1999.

Yes, 10A still exists and was recently lengthened to take longer trains, I think it sees some peak time use.

Oh right. And as for Platform 10a, doesn't it only see 2-3 trains per day due to its inconvenient location?

More that it is on a loop off the down main and so it is not worth using it except when platform 10 is busy. Its location is no more inconvenient than platform 11 used for the Stratford - Stansted Airport trains.

I observed a number of 92ts on 3a last weekend, and the doors opened pretty much at the same time all the time
