Can the Central line trains drive manually in the tunnels if they want to? Or is it ATO all of the time i have seen only a few trains drive manually in the tunnel sections i know this because the accelation of the train was very gradual not like full power like ATO.
Thanks

We can, but we should notify the control centre. If the Auto mode causes problems, not picking up codes, or just "won't" [!!] there's not an issue. Its nice to be able to run manual in the open sections also.

Best way to describe the line is - As a manual line that has trains that have the fickle ability to drive themselves when the conditions are right or if they feel like it.
Two thirds of the line defualt, or are supposed to default to manual on Sundays and a driver must be capable of driving at line speed anywhere, anytime forr whatever reason. The ATO is so craptacular that if we were to be informing the L/C that we are in manual 'cos ATO has failed then we'd be on the radio more times than Terry Wogan.
