Very acquired taste! But nice pix though. I suppose I can see where they are coming from - I think

At least the effort has been made... 10/10 for that. I like.
(Ma and Pa angelislington have had a lot to do with leaded glass in the past and have written books on the subject)
Better than some of the more recent, rather bland offerings; I feel.

+1; it makes a statement in being different, yet at the same time doesn't go to overbearing lengths to do so. Someone has clearly put time into designing it, and people deffinitely subconsciously notice this.

Will the lead (or whatever it is nowadays) jointing fade after time? I wonder if it's just overlaid onto a flat sheet of glass, the sort of thing you see on "right to buy" ex-Council Houses?

Real leaded lights are not cheap, the modern windows that appear to be leaded lights are easily mass produced and most people would not appreciate the difference. However, I have a feeling that Leicester Square has been fitted with the real thing, otherwise why go to the trouble?

I shall get my lovely almost-mother-in-law to appraise the situation. Looks like lead came has been used (to my uneducated eye).

The Hippodrome building is Grade II listed, so I expect that the new canopy, which looks as though it extends round the corner, was insisted upon as part of the restoration of the building. It would be interesting to look at old photographs, if they exist, to see whether a canopy like the new one was an original feature of the building. An update: A link to a website about the theatre: www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/LondonHippodrome.htm

Looking through the LTM photo collection, there are only three picutres - From 1923 before the station entrance opened (that was the mid 1930s afaict)
- From 1948 when it has quite a plain canopy, but it isn't clear whether it's part of the theatre's or not
- From 1959 when it clear has a separate, plain canopy
A google image search brings up interesting images, but mostly of irrelevant things like actors who performed at Leicester Square theatres, statues in Leicester Square, Bradford Forster Square station and bridges in Venice!

I've occasionally thought it might be a good idea to have a sort-of "Google Historical images" site which would only archive pictures at least (say) 20 years old,and would therefore limit the number of irrelevant results you got,as well as being a fantastic resource in itself....
