The story starts - I was walking my dog down the local common land, and as per usual, I took my camera phone to go get some shots of the railway line and some trains, while snapping away waiting for the buzz of the line and the trundle of the train, I heard some shouts and screeches, I rushed up to the nothern part of the field up by the Power terminal (whatever you call them where the overheads just finish) I saw a gang of chavs (youths) throwing their used lager bottles onto the railway line and running up and down, then my stomach did a barrel-roll, I heard a train coming, I threw the lager bottles into the bush at the side and with about 100 metres to spare between me being strawberry jam I managed to grab two and pull them off, the others disappeared, the train carried on safely and the driver honked his horn as he went past... my dog was at the fence looking safely..
I hope this can put all you worried drivers concious mind at bay..
I got the satisfaction that I saved the driver alot of stress and alot of depression, if it wasn't for that, I'd of let those stupid b*stards die!

Hmmm, there's two schools of thought here. Peersonally, I'd rather have run over a few lager cans than see someone on the track just in front of me trying to remove them. The chavs probably would have moved out of the way, but as you say it would have been a stress to the driver either way.
It's like jumping into a river to save a drowning man when you can't swim yourself.
I know you did what you thought was right, but you have to consider your own safety... We don't want to be reading about DescendingSadly being hit by a train...

Aye I can see your point of how foolish it was...

Aye I can see your point of how foolish it was... All the same it was still brave. Are a few larger bottles a risk for a derailment? And were the youths aware of the approching train?

That's a really nasty dilema you had, and I don't know which option I'd have chosen.
Well done to you for your action, but Alan's post has really put it into perspective.
But, final word of advice, be careful out there (as they used to say on Hill Street Blues) it's a dangerous place!

The youths have been known to be playing chicken with some trains on that part of the line..what makes it worse is nearby there is a unused station which they can stay and terrorize several trains...

I don't think my brain processed at that moment that if I put one foot wrong there would of been a hell of a mess under that train. I want my mummy

I want my mummy What you experienced is very similar to the feelings of most drivers in similar circumstances, so perfectly natural! Hope you're feeling better.

Thank you Dave for anyone who is planning on buying tickets I don't plan on jumping on railway lines in the future

May I just say you were a fool. Never risk your life - it's not worth it, or rather it's worth a lot more than those that deliberately risk their lives.
Moreover, never stop these idiots from withdrawing from the gene pool.

Depends on the size of them, i wouldnt have thought a larger can could derail a train, it would either knock it out the way or crush it, dont hold meto that though!
