Hi
I'm looking at photos (not many) of MR and MDR lines just after electrification. The ballast looks to be quite low grade (ash or similar with an enormous range of sizes) and applied haphazardly. Sometimes the ballast is (almost) up to the top of the rail on the outside running(nonelectric) rail, sometimes the ends of sleepers are exposed to their full depth. None of these pics are of the main (inner circle) line.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the nature of ballasting circa 1906 on the west end of the inner circle, or what material was used?

Yes. Bear with me as I'm slightly off-net. When I can get near a computer I'll try and offer a suggestion.

Originally smallish limestone ballast and then topped off with ash; I thought I'd got a couple of photos in my 'country library' - however; if c. Great War (I think) photos of Cromwell Road area are suitable, then go here Westinghouse Jubilee, kindly hosted by angelislington. You'll want page 10.
