As part of the recent DVA changes that have added a new "change here" announcement at Highbury & Islington for the ELL, I've noticed that Camden Road has had its "alight here for Camden Market" message deleted. Perhaps this was seen as a bit too much like advertising?? Incidentally, I remember one driver/guard who used to announce at Dalston Kingsland "alight here for Ridley Road Market" - but that never made in onto the DVA at all. Maybe Ridley Road complained about the unequal treatment, which led to the deletion of Camden Market?

Perhaps this was seen as a bit too much like advertising?? I think you're probably right. Similarly, on the Piccadilly line they removed "Alight here for Harrods" at Knightsbridge. On the Victoria line they removed "Alight here for University College Hospital" at Warren Street back in 2007/8 after I wrote in and complained at how the DVA was becoming information overload. A year or so later, "Exit here for the British Library" disappeared at King's Cross St. Pancras. However, both these announcements have made a return on the 2009 stock but only when set to 'tourist mode'.

So I wonder why 'Alight for Madame Tussauds' is retained at Baker Street. As I recall, that is the only 'Alight for' in the SSR trains' repertoire that refers to a commercial attraction. All others being either publicly owned or free attractions or other transport modes - Riverboat services. Anyone in Marketing know whether there is a commercial deal in place?

Interestingly, it used to say "Madame Tussauds and the Planetarium" on the Circle & Hammersmith but the latter part was dropped.

I believe the London Planetarium closed down in 2006.

The best thing they have stopped announcing is bloody Chavski Football Club at West Brompton Noticed it today. I mean LO serve at least 7 football clubs within walking distances to their stations and this was the only team to have ever got a mention. Noted as well that Westfield Shopping centre has also been dropped at Shepherds Bush.
What is strange is that at Highbury it announces change here for London Overground services to New Cross, which of course you cant because No New Cross services go to H&I.

As mentioned in the recent H&I thread, this is particularly strange as the ELL trains do not mention Clapham Junction - for which there are plenty of direct trains (this is also true on the Goblin at Gospel Oak).

Westbound on NLL yesterday, I noted "change for ... West Croydon" etc preceding H&I, not Canonbury where it ought to be.

Oh they most certainly did, when you go up and down the line at least 8 times a day in both directions you became aware ofeverything that is said.

Is dropping Westfield brand new? I heard it when I alighted at this very station on Wednesday night! Although not to go to Westfield... Travelling up and down the Watford DC the DVAs are fine but it does seem elsewhere as if they're not really fine tuned yet, which means they end up sounding shabby and almost defeat their point. Come to think of it, I can't now think to myself whether or not they mention Clapham Junction when passing through Willesden on the DC; 99% of the time I'm north of there. I noted one occasion of EXCEPTIONAL confusion on the part of the DVAs but that was on the recent Camden Road-South Hampstead services. Still, can it be THAT hard to make it work correctly? On those services they were actually confusing customers when displaying the unusual-but-correct information, but the situation was compounded by 'Hackney Wick' being announced as the next station whilst trundling along the down DC!

I believe they must have a tourist mode as sometimes the 'exits' are played and sometimes they're not. The 1973 and D78 (and no doubt the S) stocks have the 'commuter' and 'tourist' modes.

What governs when each is used? Is it down to driver discretion, and/or time/day of the week?

I believe it's due to the time of day. Peak time gets "commuter" mode, other times get "tourist" mode.

Interesting topic. Up here in Liverpool commercial announcements are still shown and announced on Merseytravel trains. On my travels yesterday I heard at Hamilton Square alight for the "U-Boat", and at James Street "LIVERPOOL ONE" (which is the big new shopping centre). Also station signs at a number of Merseyteavel stations advertise ie "Earlestown Market".
