been in the garden this afternoon, so took the opportunity for a measure.......the marker lights and tail lights are both 5 inches in diameter, so the chosen sizes aren't too bad, must just be the way I am looking at them, sorry!

I obtained my copy of MR yesterday. He used 2 mm LEDs for the front lights and 1.8 mm LEDs for the rear. The 1.8 mm is more or less spot on in size.

That's about the smallest you can get I think. My A60s use 1.8mm high intensity clear red lights and 1.8mm white LEDs for the light cluster at the front. I also use an orange 1.8mm LED for the calling on light in the cab. They look ok when in place. For stock with only marker lights I just form a box in the cab and use a lense over each light so it appears dull. I'll dig out my CO/CP pics..... OK so T stock instead.... s100.photobucket.com/albums/m6/Adthelad/?action=view¤t=DSCN0703.jpg

Rapid have very poor prices on most components!
If you want to solder them, get some component adhesive and dab it on with a cocktail stick or similar. That way the little b*ggers won't budge when you get the iron to them.

On my to do list is the conversion of a 1962 set into one of the 1995/6 pilot sets. One of the motors was actually olive green. I have stripped out the windows and removed the grab rails as they look too chunky. I'll also wire the beast with lights. Thankfully, the tail lights are placed above solebar level now.
I'm hoping this will be the start of a total repaint of the EFE tube trains to better colours. The Silver stock doesn't look right, and my 1938 set will contain a 1927 trailer which will be a different colour to the rest of the train - so the other cars will be resprayed and renumbered!
Photos will follow.....

Bump!
I've been working on the 1962 motor and will add some photos tomorrow. I'm still thinking seriously about repainting all my EFE stock.

When are you building a model depot to put all these units in Metman? XF

Quality work as ever sir. As the 62TS would need repainting anyway I would go a step further and remove the moulded handrails on the rest of the car. I did this when I converted a pair of EFE 38TS DMs into my 35TS prototype set and it transformed the 'look' of the unit. The EFE model is pretty good to start with but in my 'umble opinion seperate handrails improve them no end. I'd do my 38 stock but that's 2 X 7-car sets and a 4-car! The problem is that, doing more work on your 62 TS set would take modelling time away from the A stock....... ;D That picture of the 62 DM has given me itchy modeling fingers again. I really want to convert a set of 56TS from the EFE 59/62TS now!

Do it!!
I am going to replace all the grab rails for sure they are over scaled!
The A stock are the priority don't worry....
XF, the depot is called the spare room!! ;D

I do like the metromodels bogie upgrade. Has anyone tried it yet? It is a little expensive at 10 pounds per car! Has anyone thought of adding pinpoint bearings to the existing bogies?

I've done loads of them (albeit not for about 3 years now - still some left to do). They were about £4 per bogie when I started.
Once you get into the swing of producing them I find they're good, and probably worth paying for rather than endlessly trialling and failing with unproven ways.

I have modified 10 cars with the Metro-Models bogies John Polley does now fit pin point bearings to his own stock however his stock has a lot of running on his Abbey Road layout.
I suggest that that you remove the wheels and put a small amount of PTFE grease in in the axle boxes. Also make sure the bogies swivel freely and again a small amount of PTFE grease helps here too.

I have started to fit the Metromodels trailing bogie to some of my 38TS cars. My trailing car on my 35TS has them too. They are a revelation and I think worth every penny.

John P "productionised" his version after seeing my prototypes. Prior to that, I had tried numerous different experiments using the existing EFE bogie moulding, the (then) Harrow Model Shop bogies, and even the Pirate Models bogies, including mixtures of them all! None were particularly great, so I settled on the Metromodels moulding with the EFE side frames grafted on. Fortunately the MM moulding has sufficient clearance for conversion to EM if thin wheelsets are used, mine are from Branchlines. My original version had the pin-points just in the MM moulding, which seems to work fine for me. As has been said, the large amount of running on Abbey Road caused John to find that the plastic pin-points wore down, hence the later mod to fit metal inserts. In summary, I would highly recommend to use the latest MM conversion, anything less will come back to bite you!

Its just the cost 6.50 per bogie!!
My 3 cars (the fourth is powered by two motor bogies) will cost 39 quid!
Perhaps I can pick a few up at Acton next year and escape the P&P. Once you buy the wheels at a quid each it's not too dear.

I have now received my next 1962 trailer from ebay and it is perfect and pristine! I'm not sure I want to make it all rusty and old.
A couple of questions: Does the 1959/62 trailer and non-driving motor come with the same equipment under the chasis?
I'm not sure the aluminium finish on these EFE cars is correct. I find the cars tended to have a whiter flater look to the cars. Anyone got any ideas how I could respray them?

The aluminium look is correct when they were first introduced. You could paint it a light grey as they were when they were withdrawn due to aluminium getting oxidised. I think respraying would be painful. All I did was paint the roof a better matt tunnel dirt colour as a shiny one does not look good!
Trailers contain the compressors and saloon heater fuse boxes and thats it. Motors carry the RPA/ Breakers/ Fuses/ etc. Same as the A Stock really. The EFE ones do have the above fairly correctly installed on them.

Humbrol or Tamiya acrylic 'flat alluminium'. The Tamiya one is on my 35TS and looks fantastic. It's just a pain to get hold of now.

Was it easy to take the windows out to spray/ paint/ weather. All I am thinking of doing is painting up a 2 car IOW set to LT Yellow to make a weed killer. Wondering if it was possible to take the windows out with ease so I wont have to buy another body.
And good work there, I should really show some of my photos too (when I get the chance!)

Wasn't too bad actually. They are all on a strip. You won't get the whole strip off in one go though, it will snap into bits but it doesn't really matter.

Looking good Metman - Ferrero Rocher box clear plastic is a good replacement for damaged windows.

I'm nearly ready to spray my 1962ts pilot car green with just a bit of lighting to go in. I'm still short of a D end 1959/62 stock car in silver. Ebay is really quiet at the moment, does anyone know a good place where I can pick up one car?
