I have just had my Boss edit large captions written for ROADSCENE magazine on various photos of Level Crossings. There seems to be quite an interest in the subject and it made me wonder what ancient LCs there were say on the Met? The one we all know and love to discuss is the one at North Weald but were there any others on the tube lines? There is or was one in Ruislip depot that crosses the line in from Ruislip siding. There must be a few more depot crossings surely?

I think I've seen it pretty recently! I remember when we first moved to the SE, we had a (slightly) outdated a-z and ended up a bit confused when the level crossing marked at Woodford wasn't there

The only proper one I believe is at Neasden. Great fun if the barriers are stuck down, as a train has to be used to ferry people in and out!

Neasden - isn't that the one with a separate release lever in the IMR?
Ruislip?

There is a foot crossing north of JW70 on the Met, approximately 1/2 mile south of Mantles Wood Junction. AFAIK it is the only foot crossing of an open LU-owned line that is still open.

I realised t'other day that I have never seen a photo of Mantles Wood Junction ever! The track at the crossing, yes. It would of course require a P/way person to photo or from a CDMU or 66!

No. 6 lever - permission for level crossing. AFAICR in JM-MM (plus oversight from the lodge) - are the road signals labelled in any way - thinking of NR (YO YN, ZO ZN)?

That level crossing could be a PITA when doing maintenance. I know I was cleaning the frame contacts on more than one occasion and had the shunter on the phone because i was holding up his trains in the wee small hours, I remember one night we had a points problem 25s I think which allowed us to have a traffic jam either side of the level crossing around 0400, I can't recall now what the problem was but it was probably a clamplock unit, we changed no end of them as I recall. On another occasion we had a fault where the crossing barrier would raise as expected and then drop again just like the loss of a TQ circuit, that was fun for a little while!

There is a road crossing at Acton Depot.
There is a foot crossing at Ealing Common Depot which you had to cross to get to the old District Line civils office. Visitors with no depot track training were allowed to cross as local rules allowed it. The Asset Engineer refused to ever go there.

AFAICR in JM-MM (plus oversight from the lodge) - are the road signals labelled in any way - thinking of NR (YO YN, ZO ZN)? I believe they are - though I've never really looked. From digging through my paperwork in 1985, when Neasden - Willsden Green and the depot was resignalled there were 4 red/green signals MM6 (1) and MM6 (2) on the signalbox side of the crossing and MM6 (3), MM6 (4) on the other. They were controlled at that time by lever 6 in the IMR, left normally reverse and biased in favour of road traffic - I see now that they're flashers and an amber, presumably controlled by appropriate TC occupancy - when did this change as a matter of interest?
