I believe only three of the cars are now to be restored even to cosmetic condition. The official reason is the cost but, in truth one of Q38 DM's has so much missing it looks like a non -starter even for this level of refurbishment. That means they aren't going to run, especially with only one DM in anywhere like complete condition. The Q23 was never intended to be returned to running condition but kept in the 4 car rake as a trailer. I feel one of the remaining CO or CP cars in preservation elsewhere should be purchased as a donor vehicle. This is regularly done in steam loco preservation circles, but you need the manpower and more importantly the will and money to make this happen. Then ask where the original parts missing from the Q38 went to when taken off in Acton Works all those years ago before the Q stock ever reached the LT Museum site. Well, apart from the Q35/N35 trailer 08063 exhibited in 2009 at Upminster, what other stock can LU use? They have two Q23/G23 DMs (with or without mtors!), 4184 and 4248. So what CP DMs have they got available, if any? I know of the Q38 DM 4417, but they will need another operable DM, unless they use R DM 22679. Any thoughts?

4248 will probably remain at Covent Garden. At Quainton Road there is a 3 car unit of CO/CP stock. CP stock DM 54233, CO DM 53028 and COP trailer 013063. Mangapps Farm has R38 DM 22624 and the Walthamstow museum has R49 DM 21147 and CP stock DM 54256. That makes 11 cars in all remaining from the O,P,Q and R stock. All would be a long term project except for the 4 Q stock cars. The only other ones that would be likely to be restored to running order is the 3 car unit at Quainton Road.

I shall join the thread soley to point out that 4248 was put in position 18 years ago and subsequently built around. To remove it would require the demolition of much of the museum then the lowering of the car to ground level.
