I don't recall the track layout south of Surrey Quays being on two levels - one (the northbound track) being much higher than the other - when the ELL was part of LU. Am I just remembering this wrongly or did they indeed alter the layout? If so, does anyone know why?

The layout was altered to take the northbound track over the future connection to Old Kent Road Junction and Queen's Road Peckham station, for the line to Clapham Junction. The pointwork for this connection is already in place in both the north and southbound tracks.

On that note, I do remember that trackbed offturn being there before that overpass was built. Did the ELL ever used to go to Old Kent Road Junction back in the past, then?

It did, but I think this line was closed around 100 years ago!! CULG ( www.davros.org/rail/culg/eastlondon.html) states that the route was opened in 1876 and closed in 1911. The trackbed was also used by a connection to Up Side of the line at New Cross. The track layout was very complex around here, see upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/29/Bricklayers_Arms_%26_New_Cross%2C_Midhurst_RJD_91.jpg (a large scan of the layout from Wikipedia).

For passenger traffic, they have been unused for very many years, but for goods trafic they were used untill the mid-sixties. They were only lifted after the general disconnectiong of the ELL from BR in 1966ish.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Interesting stuff. It seems the ELL has (apart from an interlude form the 1960s - 2010) long beeen a sort of hybrid and interface between the LU and NR/BR networks.
