Within the past 6 months or so, the exteriors of the A's are looking disgusting! 5205 in particular is in horrible state, the cab end of 5205 (I think its 5205) has had alot of the paint scraped off showing bare aluminium underneath! Ive also seen many units with graffiti removed but the cab has not been painted back to red, leaving the cabs half red! Will anything be done about it

I don't suppose it would be a good use of funds to paint something you're going to scrap soon. I wouldn't do it to a car I was planning to get rid of unless I was selling it as a going concern. Sadly, A Stock aren't likely to get that sort of reprieve.

Sadly its not just the A stock. Other stocks are starting to look bad. Even the 96s are suffering from acid attack. I saw many 72s looking worn too.

Lack of money and relentless attack by the ever growing scum!

I was noticing that, none of the A-stock units seemed to even be clean let alone with paintwork in good condition. I wonder if the cleaning will stop totally for them soon (except for the litter pickers at termini)

Well perhaps the passengers just take their litter with them on the Met now and it just looks like they've been cleaned

I don't suppose it would be a good use of funds to paint something you're going to scrap soon. Ahem. It is a well known maxim that things are painted just before they close or are scrapped on other railway systems in the British Isles. I'm sure the jovial Dr. Beeching or the equally cheery Sir David Serpell might disagree. ;D

Whats caused everything to go downhill so much? It doesn't help that it's now 10-20 years since the trains were painted. Does anyone know the design life of the external painting done at refurbishment ?

I suspect once cause is the departure of ToT once Boris arrived and the general collaose in staff morale since (see also Speak Up 2010)

its not pleasant experience to travel on a dirty uncomfortable transport system when there looks to be a decline in standards' particularly given the cost of fares ,it may well be that there are underlying issues.trains should not be exposed to attacks of graffiti, tfl does have a duty of care to maintain security of it premises and prevent unwelcome people causing a nuisance, riding on dirty/vandalised trains and it is no excuse that they are to be scrapped as they are still in service and it would be hoped that even when they are withdrawn they would still be in a clean serviceable condition.

Well they've got to still last a year and a half so I guess something needs to be done for the ones staying till the very end.

Exactly, the A stock are going to be around a little while yet as are the C and D stock - something needs to be done. Duty of care is a good phrase!

Would putting an email through to TfL to put them through the wash every now and again be good enough? Lol

Whats caused everything to go downhill so much? The age as well hasn't exactly helped. The trains have had an awesome run over the years, but as pointed out in another comment, youths or 'chavs' are a major problem when it comes to trains being defaced and ruined.

Its the depots responsibility to keep the fleet looking reasonable. They have managed to keep them clean for the past 50years, why just let them stay vandilised now?

I guess they feel they're fighting a losing battle? The way things are today with a lot of young teenagers and their fondness for graffiti, it doesn't matter how many times you clean a train, they will just get ruined again sooner or later. 50 years ago, I bet graffiti wasn't an issue like it is now. 50 years ago, you wouldn't of seen half the 'tags' in tunnels and on trains and stations as you do now. Especially the guy behind the tag 'Tox' He has been charged counterless times by London Transport and only the other day I saw 'Tox 11' written on tunnel walls. I wonder how long the S stock will last before they start getting defaced.

I wonder how long the S stock will last before they start getting defaced. Fifty years ago there were very few cheap aerosol paint canisters available which could be purchased! By the way, teenager only covers a six year span, so the use of 'young' or 'old' is a tad pointless?

Oh yeah, 21007 has a small tag on the northern DM!

There is no doubt that the front ends and the bodysides of a large number of DMs now sadly look very much the worst for wear.
In addition, I know a separate thread was started concerning the exterior cleanliness of 5090/91 but as an almost daily user of 'A' Stock, it has not escaped my attention that there is an ever increasing number of windows becoming more and more difficult to see very much out of because of exterior dirt.

I remember watching the Tube when they were starting the refurbishment programme for the D stock. The new trains would be anti-graffiti. The first time I got on a refurbished train, and at this time, there wasn't many in service, I saw plenty of scratched 'tags' and what not on the windows.

Any increase in fares does nothing to compensate the DfT slashing £2.2bn off TfL’s budget over the next 4 years. Basically if a train moves it will be put into service regardless of what it looks like, don’t hold your breath waiting for anything more than the bare minimum being done to keep things going especially on any of the old subsurface stock
