While waiting at HOTH tonight for a seemingly missing Uxbridge service I spotted a couple of things which I'd like to ask about: - Beyond the southbound end of Platform 5 (I assume it's southbound... city-bound at least!) there's an 'S8 style sign which, instead of the usual 'S8' in the middle shows 'SR' - is this for stopping for reversing, or does it mean something completely different? - At the City-Bound end of Platform 2, there's also an S8 marker post - but you can't go down to the city from Platform 2 on LUL trains as there's no 3rd Rail thingy beyond there... is this presumably a stopping point if there's a service suspension from HOTH -> City where there's shuttle services to each destination running? - Why does HOTH always seem to be cold? OK, not sure you can actually answer this one, but never mind

S:R is for reverse as far as I know. Platform 2 is for LU trains reversing there, either in the event of disruption, engineering work, or the timetabled 'rusty rail' moves. And yes, HoH may be cold, but Rayners Lane might be colder, as it has the nickname of "Pneumonia Junction".

That's what I thought too.
Interestingly, Liverpool Street Inner Rail has a stopping mark S:S which must stand for S stock stopping indicating that both S7 and S8 will use the same place.

(why do the stopping boards say S8 anyway, as maybe at one point S7s may run up the Met?)

Guess they will cross that bridge when they come to it.
Perhaps all drivers using the Met will be instructed to pull up to the S8 marker. When ATO is in, it won't matter.

And while we are on the subject destination signage at HOTH is appalling. One set of boards on each platform and from down the platform cannot be seen due to general clutter of other signs. Don't engineers/display specialists ever walk the walk and see things from the passenger point of view??

The answer to your last point is probably 'no'!!
There have been many cases where new signage has been put up and then completely obscured something else. Bond Street SB Jubilee Line used to be (still is??) a case in point with "minutes away" dot matrix indicator being obscured by a way out sign.

Or what about Baker St.?? Only one set of TV screen things as you come down the steps from the concourse.Tough if you are further up the platform rushing for the train from the Bakerloo up stairs.

Greetings
The situation at Harrow 5 is going to be an interesting one The S8 marker is used normally for trains going south, The additional SR board is for trains arriving from the north which are going to go back north, either into the siding or back towards Uxbridge, the signal that allows this move can't be moved as its too tight for the siding points, so trains arriving to reverse south to north in Pfm 5 must stop at, or pull fwd to the SR board, and the front doors will (in theory) be cut out automatically as they will be on the pfm ramp.
Theres also a new sign here at track level which is covered up at present, wonder what that is going to be ??
Cheers Phil

Yes, there's a second set of CSDE beacons programmed to cut out those doors not at the platform. The bagged sign is ISTR a Limit of Shunt board. Possibly not necessary with implementation of the second chevron stop mark (the SR one). I wonder how long before the decision to remove it....

Greetings I hope it is'nt a L.O.S. sign as that does seem to be another waste of money, look up 10ft and theres a big red light, on the station starter signal, would'nt suprise me though ! if you're coming out of the siding, pull up to the SR mark, then you'll be in the platform, The SR mark is same place as the proposed LOS ? are there any other places where similar arrangements apply ? Cheers Phil ginstersrailwayphotos.fotopic.net/

It is indeed a limit of shunt sign and predated the SR board by some margin, appearing soon after JB51.52 was moved further south IIRC.
Northwood also has an SR board for trains reversing north-south off the NB platform.
