I remember being told that if anyone trained for a cabin this took the form of a week on each shift at least before becoming qualified. At control rooms like Earls Court , Baker Street etc is this the same?

For Baker Street, the training is currently 12 weeks. This will be on a variety of shifts - with a minimum 2 weeks of night shift. You learn the entire control area as a whole. This may seem daunting at first, but once you have mastered how the equipment works, it's easier to adapt that knowledge to each area.
Rooms such as Earls Court have varying training programs, where you learn each area or desk individually before moving on to the next. To qualify fully in the room can therefore take months.
We have a few people here who have trained at Earls Court and will know more.

At places like Earls Court and Coburg, the first 2 weeks is spent on the "quieter desks" such as Kings Cross and Tower Hill, to get used to the way the programme machines operate. Then about 7 weeks (2 weeks of nights) on the busy desks Earls Court or Acton Town. You then qualify on that desk. Go back to do Tower Hill and Kings Cross for 3 or 4 weeks, then onto Northfields or Hammersmith about 4 or 5 weeks, then thats the whole room covered!
So in total about 22 weeks in all! This can be extended, as once you are qualified for a desk, you can be pulled off training to cover it!

Some machines I notice never give any trouble. On a few the same problems occur daily; timing out, not stepping, double stepping, clearing signals early (Ealing Broadway up to 4 mins early ), not extra training, plus there is the old favourite of a wrong TD code ;D ;D What annoys me the most is when it doesn't ask you about for an out of turn, but just clears or doesnt clear when put into First Come So certain areas are sometimes left in button! My opinion is that if something is not working as it should do (I'm not talking about things like Embankment Auto Reverse TD here! but normal day-to-day stuff), then I will put a job out on it day after day! If it causes a delay, then the better as it will cost the Infraco some money and offer some incentive! ;D ;D
