Can anyone tell me why on the eastbound Picc line Manor House-Bounds Green there are X signals I always thought this was in connection with entering controlled areas etc. There are no points other than Wood Green no floodgates and nothing else that I can see. They were installed a couple of years after that end of the Picc line was resignalled.

From what I remember from my line mapping course last year, they are there to enable train numbers to be recorded for the signal operator. We never really went into that much detail to be honest, but I do know that when that part of their operation fails the controller will be on the radio checking trains numbers as they pass through the area.
