Were very nearly sent back from northwood on thur evening, so that 5179 could be placed back into service! ( possibly 5006 as well!)
The season ? The met had flatlined , all s stocks pulled from service, and the A stock fully booked for maintenance. Only just enough trains available for service.
Hence the lack of activity at Northwood Thur afternoon/ evening!

I have never heard of so much rubbish in so short a post. The depot offered the required 48 A-stocks at 1430hrs on Thursday. One train did become defective in depot, but another train was made up by the time it was needed at around 1715hrs. The S-stocks were all kept in depot as a precaution / due to the ongoing investigations after the Uxbridge incident. However yesterday one train was released back into service. Neither 5179, and most definately not 5006 were ever considered to be available for use. We would rather have a train cancelled than risk running 2 units which are not fit for service. Where do you get them from deadmans

It would have been an interesting exercise getting them out of the unelectrified Northwood siding at short notice ;D ;D ;D I think to return them to service was rather wishful thinking - and impossible!! Seven cars left as of this morning.

Seven cars left as of this morning. it was on the cards to pull them both back, all you need is the ERU, and the right type of winch. The ERU were told on Thur NOT to cut the couplers, just in case the units were sent back!

Surely 5179 was fit for service? It was 5006 that was running isolated and therefore got the chop!

It was NEVER on the cards to bring them back. I'm sure you'll know that given I was the controller on duty, I would have a certain amount of say in such decisions.

5179 was in service very close to the end.

Surely 5179 was fit for service? It was 5006 that was running isolated and therefore got the chop! 5179 wasn't fit for service either. Although it didn't have the kind of issues that affected 5006, there were other factors which would have prevented it's use - not least that a few spares had been taken off it before it left depot ;D Basically, the 8-car set had enough wheels and motors and 2 driving cabs to get it to Northwood, and that was all that was guaranteed ;D

What had been removed? A few fuses, and other little bits!

What had been removed? A few fuses, and other little bits! the depot cannot take items off, when the train leaves by rail. 5179 was a train prep away from service.

It was mentioned somewhere that 5006 suffered an electrical burnout, and that it would be a significant job (in terms of effort or time or both I don't know) to fix it. This means that it likely wouldn't have been available for service yesterday even if it hadn't been withdrawn.

Right then folks, that's enough willy waving - mines bigger than yours and I have the power to lock this thread and bring the arguing to an end, so that's what is happening.
