On the Video 125 Driver's Eye View, the train is held at signal FM34 to wait for another train to clear platform 3. FM34 however is not the last signal before the station as there is another in advance of it with junction indicators. Is there any reason why the train could not advance to that signal? If the train in palatform 3 is obstructing the overlap then why does that signal exist at all? The junction indicators I would have thought could just be on FM34.
It does also seem a bit strange that the train was held there when there were no trains in platforms 4 or 5.

It's down to the overlap on FM33 (the one with the junction indicators) and/or whether or not particular routes have been selected and platforms are occupied AFAIA.
Purely from the drivers point of view, from the eastbound into platform 3, FM34 will only clear once FM25 (platform 3 starter) has been cleared and the signaller then subsequently selects FM34 & FM33 route 3.
From the eastbound to platforms 4 or 5, FM34 will not clear until the rear of the train has passed over 28 or 31 points and is all on the westbound, then FM34 and FM33 will clear almost simultaneously.
We'll also be held at FM34 if a train is coming into the platforms from the depot.
If the route is already set up before the train arrives, FM34 will be cleared straight away and FM33 will approach clear.

IIRC (I was qualified in Upminster cabin once upon a time but it's a few years since I've worked there) if a train is cleared up to FM33 then a train cannot be brought out of platform 5 - so as a general habit signallers would tend to hold the train at FM34 to avoid making an error and locking themselves up.

I think I was trying to say that but got myself in a muddle by trying to give too much information - your explanation is so much better.
The more is less thing is certainly true here!!
