Good news! It would appear that in the last few days, a programme has commenced to give some 'A' Stock units at least a well needed external bodyside clean in order to remove much of the grime and dirt. One of those units is 5090/91. Others include 5002/03, 5094/95, 5124/25, 5146/47 and 5206/07. No doubt, others will follow.

Unlikely to have been repainted, but certainly cleaned and maybe some replacement "sticky back plastic" over the damaged areas.

5114 was imacculate on thursday, saw it again today, looking less immaculate but far cleaner than its brothers and sisters.

Yes, 5114 is one of the units that have received an exterior clean during the last few days. Others include 5226, 5068, 5118, 5060 and 5142.

I got a lovely clean A stock to Uxbridge today. I couldn't stop staring at it when I got off, it was gleaming!

maybe some replacement "sticky back plastic" over the damaged areas. I think they've only been cleaned. I can't remember which unit it was, but I saw one on Thursday which was very clean but had some damaged paint. Cleaning them does make a big difference though:

I mentioned a few days that approx 30 units had been treated to a well needed external clean. Quite a few more have been similarly treated this week including 5132 which means that all of the four remaining units of the original five identified on this site as candidates for the first A Stock withdrawals have received an external clean. Also completed earlier this week is 5004 a month or so ahead of its 50th anniversary in passenger service on the 12th June. Also completed a couple of weeks back is 5010 which will celebrate 50 years in passenger service on the 13th June. There is no doubt that the visible external appearance of 'A' Stock is beginning to look markedly improved.

Got 5211 (I think) today from Farringdon - outside was good , inside was really good - very clean floors , vacuumed upholstery and a deep clean to all surfaces and glass . Well done someone - now lets get the rest up to this standard.
Hate to say this , but the fleet has been really let go compared to other lines (73TS excepted) and most TOC's.

Most of the trains have been cleaned since those were taken.

More recently cleaned units include 5038, 5155, 5044, 5232, 5138, 5106, 5169 and 5157. There are not a great deal more to do and I expect a small number of those residual units will be the ones that form the next couple of trains or so for scrap. We'll see.

Further units done are 5014, 5185, 5201, 5024, 5215, 5054, 5229 and 5136. Some of the few 'A' and 'D' end units that have not received an exterior srcub up must be early candidates for withdrawal? We will see.

I can assume that 5205 is still a possible one in the firing line. Is it? I forget which ones are still grimy.

Well despite the doom and gloom of accelerating withdrawals, other more lucky units continue to receive an exterior clean. I had thought that some of those units remaining in need of a clean would perhaps be amongst the withdrawals now occurring but obviously not! 5155 was done only about 6 weeks ago. Anyway, additional units include 5064, 5199, 5086, 5050, 5153, 5097, 5161, 5183 and 5203. That leaves only ten or so units to be done.

Well it's looking like 5020 will reach 50 years in passenger service next Tuesday. Any chance of it getting an exterior clean before then?!

5030, 5116 and 5217 cleaned up in the last few days.
That just leaves 5020, 5046, 5072, 5120, 5177, 5221 and 5225 to do...subject of course to the obvious proviso

Better late than never, but 5020, 5046 and 5221 all had an exterior clean at the end of last week. The appearance of 5020+5221 as a current formation is considerably improved. Nice to see at this late stage.

Saw them this morning, looking good I think. Surprised 5030 was cleaned, that one sounds knackered!

Does anyone here know wether units have actually been repainted since refurb? Or has graffiti or blemishes been covered with sticky back or just cleaned off?
