As I'm sure you all have marked on your calenders, tommorow is the Met Railways 148th Birthday! I constantly bombard my English teacher with inside knowledge of LU, it's become an 'inside joke', this is the email I sent her: Unfortunately we are doing Christmas Carol in English...

Let us hope LU will celebrate it properly in 2013, although I am sure we won't see anything as grand as in 1963 - I was fortunate to be there in 1963 and enjoyed every moment.

I'm hoping it is something more than a decal on some S stock

Well, there is still some historical rolling stock around - albeit a bit distant from London, in most cases.

Hopefully there'll be some A stock around too! I'm sure we can get Met No.1 and the Bogie stock from the Bluebell Railway. If the Dreadnoughts can be obtained we can put those BR 4TCs in the shed and have a proper Met train with Sarah leading. Now that would be 3 generations of Met Line Stock.

Don't forget the 'T' stock. I would suggest Sarah + the Dreadnoughts + the 'T' stock. With through MU wiring there would be no need to run round. Then # 1 with the Bluebell stock. Hopefully the four cars of 'Q' stock could also be running although they are District rather than Metropolitan stock.

Might as well add some black 5s, 4MTs other BR steam locos and haul the dreadnoughts to Aylesbury just like in the good old days! ;D

Well, Happy 148th Birthday to the Met! Just think, the A stock has served the line for 1/3 of that time!! ;D

Perchance to dream..... I doubt H&S would allow a slam-door train to run from Baker Street to Aylesbury without it being disfigured by central door locking which I can't see the Bluebell or the KWVR agreeing to! Maybe their use as shuttles on the Chesham branch could get by but could LT cope with the demand? I don't know how long the bay at Chalfont is but would it a) cope with a seven car set of the 'Dreadnoughts' and the Bogie stock and b) will it still be there in 2013 or will it have ripped up as 'redundant' by then? One has to remember that both sets of coaches are vacuum braked at the mo. Either the fitting of these with air brakes or the fitting of No12 with vacuum wil cost money. I am sure that something will be planned but let us all hope that the celebration is worthy of the anniversary. There is another thread somewhere on this subject.
Happy birthday MET. I'm just glad I don't have to blow out the candles.... ;D

The bay at Chalfont just literally fits a 4 car of A stock.

'Metropolitan Mixture' sounds a bit like some kind of old-fashioned (and powerful!) mixture of boiled sweets, especially for consumption during the winter weather. 'A quarter of Metropolitan Mixture, please!'

Another problem - as much as I hate to say it especially as I love the idea of using Dreadnoughts & Bogie stock is that they are Wooden Framed Coaches and banned from the Mainline. Unless of course LU has never made that same ban (to my knowledge) - I reckon Chiltern might object as a 'backside' covering exercise.
Pity I like the idea of Sarah & the Dreadnoughts. Or even better Overhaul John Hampden and have it top & tail with Sarah on a 'mainline' service Baker St - Rickmansworth and it connect with a Bogie stock shuttle from Ricky - Watford alternating between MET No.1 & an Overhauled No.23... Fantasy is a wonderful thing...

I don't think overhauling John Hampden is going to happen in a hurry - it is currently in a very awkward position in a building which was essentially built around it. The costs of moving it out would probably be astronomical!
Re: wooden framed coaches - perhaps if they were run independently from the main service (I'm thinking Chesham?) it would satisfy the beancounters? No risk of them having an argument with a high-speed S stock, and remember there are preserved railways which run at 45mph these days under special permission. Of course, the lack of run-around and DDA may put paid to that.

The costs of moving it out would probably be astronomical! Indeed... But it would be a fantastic sight you have to agree. The only Preserved Railway I know that can operate over 25 Mph is the Great Central - under engineering possession with no passengers; trains can run up to 60 Mph. Besides... can you imagine the cost of overhauling No.23... It'd be a sight to see however - I'd love to know how efficient or lack of efficiency the condensing system was even if it is akin to gassing oneself.

I'm pretty sure the GCR have run at 45mph in regular service, with increased maintenance etc requirements.
John Hampden, Met 23 and the push-pull trailer and Q23 stock that join it were actually brought into Covent Garden on the ground level, before being jacked up to their position. A floor was later built right above them, vehicles craned up onto that, then lifts etc put around it - hence why I doubt it'll be moving soon!
Is there not a condensing N2 or similar which has been restored?

There are only three possibly four Dreadnoughts thats why I suggested the 'T' stock cars to top and tail the Dreadnoughts with Sarah, they are compatible as they ran with Sarah as part of the brake block testing train. I think reinstating 'John Hampden' is a none starter as it has been robbed of parts to keep Sarah running. My suggestion would be to run the Dreadnoughts and bogie stock as one train from Baker Street to Amersham behind Sarah and then onwards behind No. 1 to Quainton Road in the morning. The 'T', 'Q', 'R' and 'A' stock to provide shuttles to and from Baker Street or Amersham to connect with a steam shuttle to Quainton Road. In the morning begin with the EMU's delivering patrons from outlying areas to Baker Street for the first 'special' hauled by Sarah. During the day the EMU's will connect with the steam shuttle to Quainton Road at Amersham. The last train from Quainton Road would be the reverse of the first train. Sarah would be 'rested' during the day or operate with other stock. An additional steam locomotive may be required to 'top and tail' the hauled stock, a pannier in LT livery perhaps?

Well, Happy 148th Birthday to the Met! Just think, the A stock has served the line for 1/3 of that time!! ;D And still running strong, just like Sarah! Yep, steam on the met ( wasn't there for that in the 90's, not born yet) and on the MDR For the tubes, some 38ts hopefully ;D and some other ts like the 67ts and any other ts that are still around (one historical train every hour on the hour if possible???) fin

I celebrated by taking a journey to work that included travelling from Bishop's Road station to Gower Street station via the resited Farringdon Street station!

I marked the occasion by boarding a little further along at Kings Cross, travelled as far as Baker Street, then looked after the afternoon and evening part of it's birthday ;D
At least for the occasion the service remained relatively quiet, with nothing whatsoever affecting any of the original section.
