Hello All, I've been browsing the site as a guest, and recently as a member, for a while now, going back through all the ancient history but I've haven't come across anything on this subject so I thought I'd start a thread- my first- and see if anyone can shed some light on the matter. Growing up in East Ham, I remember articles, maybe in the late 70's or early 80's, in the local rag relating to a proposed station at Barringtons Arches- between East Ham and Barking. The reasoning IIRC was that the houses near this location were as far from bus routes as they were from East Ham station and that therefore a station would benefit huge numbers of people. Was this merely a proposal or did it ever reach a planning stage? Would it still be a viable proposition? I'd be really interested to find out what people think?

Hello, welcome along.
There were loads of plans drawn up in the 60's and talked about well into the 70's, but none of them ever seemed to come to fruition. There's a few threads relating to various proposals over the years, one included the tube right down to Lewisham (my neck of the woods) Sadly I'm not too clued up on what was discussed out East, but there's bound to be people who are from the area at the time mentioned who'll be able to help.

As SE13 says, you're very welcome!
As with he, I'm no expert on these more historical matters and I have to say it's not something I've heard of previously - even anecdotaly.
But that doesn't mean to say I'm right!. There are bound to be others who know more than I! So please do ask challenging questions - I'm sure someone wil provide informed answers.

Do you mean here, just off the eastern end of Little Ilford sidings?

That's the spot exactly. The road passing below the tracks has been blocked off now for maybe 20 years to all but pedestrians and cyclists. But the proximity of the houses to this spot can be clearly seen.

I can't see how it would ever be possible to put a station there to be honest.
The District is on a bend there; to the North you have the Goblin line in close proximity, and to the South c2c's tracks including part of their depot. You could maybe access the track from above or below, but there is absolutely no room available to put any platforms in.
Sorry, but I can't help thinking that whoever suggested this originally simply has no idea of what is or isn't possible.

As with all the other project expansion ideas that were branded around in the 60's and 70's it's quite possible that this was among them. DLR now covers what was proposed for either the Bakerloo or ELL down to Lewisham and beyond, though it's taken the best part of 40 years to get that one up and running. I recall the plans of closure of a lot of stations, and the building of others at the most random of places, not forgetting the Northern extension. Even quite recently when Arsenal moved grounds from Highbury to the lifeless bowl there was talk of moving Arsenal tube and re-opening it under the grey thing. The Victoria and later the Jubilee shifted ideas from one place to another, and when the GLC eventually folded, most of those plans went with it (including their ridiculous idea of building a football stadium at Ally Pally and forcing Arsenal and the unmentionables to share a ground, while profiting on the sale of the land of both grounds) I suppose a lot of the plans were pie in the sky, but they were certainly there, again going back to football grounds there was talk of each ground having it's own station as a branch from whatever line it was served by, which bizarre as it sounds now, was a serious option to try and cut football hooliganism in the 70's.

The OP mentioned late 70's or early 80's - the current layout there has been that way for a good 40 years, so I suggest that's highly unlikely to be the case.

A few of us here could have done with a station there on the night of the Barking fire last year ;D
