I was on 6158 today and I found it was making a noise like the fans you would find on the DMs. What's causing this and, why?
Also I found this on 6051 earlier this year.

What do you mean by fans? The compressors or the high pitched noise that can be heard on all stock till the 92 stock?

It's like that high-pitched noise but, it seems to be coming from the speakers or somewhere like that

Perhaps its something in the cab and the drivers left the PA mike on?

I heard the driver make an announcement and hang up again, unless there's some problem with the thing upon which the PA thing rests.

'A' stock is susceptible to the MA 850Hz frequency getting on to the PA wires particularly in damp weather, probably via electrical leakage at autocouplers. It sometimes seems to help by putting the PA handset back on the hook switch. That's hook, not hooker!

Either the speakers have gone or the PA handsets off the hook

MA whine was the first thing that came to my head when I saw this but I thought I'd keep quiet. t697's explanation seems rather reasonable; it only takes a small current (even induced) on the speaker wires to begin producing noise.
