How are bullhead chair clips installed? The new ones I've seen appear to be squeezed into place, while the old ones look like they were simply designed to be hammered in.

The old ones (that look a bit like a coiled clock spring) are indeed hammered in. Pic at www.railway-technical.com/Bullhead-Track-closeup.jpg

The sprung steel keys on bullhead rail are hammered into position. The key is tapered with the thin end forced inbetween the chair and the web of the rail first. Because they are wedged shaped they can only be used in single direction running track with the thick end facing direction of traffic to stop them falling out. Pan lock keys are used for bi-directional running track which has bullhead rail.
