I took the Met into London about a month ago and I got a unit which had metal plates screwed onto the edges of one door leaf on each set of doors, that covered the rubber seals. Just wondering what is the purpose of these?

Hi, If you meant the plate highlighted below, they are supposed to help the doors close so that the door leaf doesn't scratch against the edge.

I know what you mean, seen it before, there's one four car unit which has one on every door leaf but I have no idea which one it is.

It's 5234. This was the first unit to be refurbished under the main refurb contract. The pre-refurb door edge rubbers were an earlier standard LU design and in refurb a more modern design was installed. This needed a metal extension on the door to take the new slimmer rubber extrusion. After the first train, a neater design was implemented on the remainder. The first unit retains the preliminary design that looks different.

The now scrapped unit 5173 also had them - part of train 1.

Yes, I would because it was part of train one of course!!
234-5 was made up of older cars out of service and helped provide a float when trains were being refurbed!
Just as well then, 5234-6234-6235-5235 is the next unit I'm currently working on for my layout. I was building 5234 last week!!
