I frequently travel between West Ham and Barbican. In the mornings it is more likely than not that a District Line train arrives first. So, following instructions on posters, I catch that and change to the H&C at Aldgate East.
But the eventually arriving H&C train is invariably full or nearly so. I conclude that it too has come through West Ham. So I would have been better off waiting for it there, presumably? Why are we advised to catch the first available train and change at Aldgate East?

... because in the older timetables many Hammersmith & City trains started at Whitechapel. If you were standing at a station beyond Whitechapel (e.g. West Ham, Mile End) you'd have waited for a very long time on the off-chance there'd be a Hammersmith & City coming from Barking. This has changed now as H&C runs through to Barking most of the time, and the Whitechapel reversal point moving to West Ham because of Crossrail. It's still fairly good advice for that journey though - get as far as you can, then change.  |

Not sure what is happening at Plaistow. The advantage is it has a separate platform and doesn't hold up the service while the train is being emptied (like at West Ham). The down side is that to head back West it has to cross the Eastbound line (hopefully not going down it ;D). I hope they keep Plaistow as a reversing point, I like it - (so it'll probably go then!)

Plaistow will continue to be used as it is today - there are no plans to change that at all.
There have been some delays with the new siding at West Ham but it's not intended to be used as a regular booked reversing location (except for planned engineering works) anyway - it is only for last minute ad hoc reversals. Essentially it'll be used in much the same way as Mansion House bay is used, for example.
There is a rumour that Tower Hill reverser's may be extended to West Ham during the Olympics, but there's nothing concrete to substantiate that at the moment.
