Where are the 1983 TS stored. IIRC there is one at South Harrow and one at Uxbridge. How many of them were orriginaly built?

This shows where they were and gives a little explination, but I think that most of them have been scrapped now.

I believe there may be a few 83 Stocks stored in Pigs Bay MOD (Shoeburyness) and IIRC I remember seeing a Photo of an 83 stock Driving Motor car in Neasden.
A bit OT, but has anybody seen the new Malteasers (I think!) advert? It shows a clip of a Train interior, and I'm 100% sure it's an 83 stock, anybody know anymore about this?

I'm pretty sure, 100% infact, it's not. 72 MkI stock I'd say it is, the old style Northern line map is a bit of a give away I thought. That and the fact that is one of the regulars they hire to film crews as it is based at Aldwych usually, which is a hotspot in itself for film crews!

I didn't know there were so many, what's the wait for these being scrapped? That list is about 3 years out of date. Most 83s are now scrapped.

There are some at South Harrow and Cockfosters. Last time I visited Uxbridge, in August there were perhaps 2x 6 car sets in the sidings. Those at Cockfosters are covered in green gunge and have been heavilly vandalised by the local chav brigade. Those at South Harrow in the sidings are also in the same condition. I would guess that after so long in store, most of the equipment is probably seized

There are 5 sidings at South Harrow (numbered 31 to 36 roads) but I think only one is in regular daily use. Uxbridge has 12 sidings (numbered 27 to 38 roads) with 8 of them in regular daily use.

Out of sheer curiosity, if someone wanted to buy an 83, either one car of, or an entire train, what kinda money would be involved?
Also, what's at Shoeburyness? If it's MOD, are they used for target practice, or cut up for scrap / squished with a big crusher, or ... ?

There was a sale of the first batch, about 3 years ago, the ad was posted on another forum, the prices were starting from £2000 per car.

It's just a big graveyard for old trains. You can see a bit through the outer fence - but be aware that this is an active MOD area, so they might not appreciate you hanging around for too long!

Why are/were the 83TS so bad? If I ever travelled on them it would have been when I was too young to remember, so this is an honest question.

Well i was youngish when i traveled on them.
Well from what i remeber they were a bit strange.
The single leaf doors i think were a problem.
I remember i was one back in say 6 or 7 around that.
Well i was in a carrage where all the doors closed and one took a few seconds and slammed shut!
They were nice enough basicly the district line but smaller.
In a way it was a waste of money a newer stock that was srapped but oh well

The 83's were very good trains. It's the Jubilee extention that ended thier life.
Firstly they were to be intergrated into the now 1996 stock thats why the 96 stock has the same low profile passenger windows to match. The 83's would have undergone a refurbishment with modifying the door width. As this was to be a lengthy and daft process it was decided to just order new stock.
Then apparently a few test runs of 83's on the piccadilly were run for gauging tests. These proved ok but it was decided not to go ahead to refurbish a few units for this line and so they lay dorment......

Dorment?
You mean scrapped!
I think they should of used them on the Pic line as extra trains for the new T5 extention.

I don't think the 83ts had the same motors has the ones on the District line. IIRC one of the District line trains had prototype 83ts type motors recently changed.

Now I am a bit confused. I heard that 83's were unreliable and yet some on here say they were good trains!! Which is what?

Most of the ones calling them unreliable never went on them.

Not sure what motors were used on the 83s, but the only thing that was tested on the D stock for the 83s was the analogue brake. Two units of D stock were fitted with analogue braking 7080 & 7043. 7080 had the one which eventually was fitted to the 83s. These two units have now had their analogue braking removed, and have been fitted with standard Westcode braking.

83TS also had non standard control equipment Knippe an electrically driven camshaft of German design. This was fitted to 5606 on the H& C as a test unit,it ran as a permanent middle motor till the test was finished, then rather than restore it to conventional PCM the unit was scrapped.

I had work experience in 1991 and shadowed somebody from the overhaul works at acton. They were having some problem with the door arms and motors but never heard much else wrong with them besides that.
I used them quite alot when they were in service and were always comfortable, great seat layout which was unique and had a good speed. Also understood most drivers loved driving them.
As i said earlier they were made dorment at the time of the new stock but of course now mostly scrapped. Though a section of one car is in Great ormand st hospital!

There's still some at Cockfosters depot, I don't think realistically they'll ever be able to be used again. I heard something once about a Perkins engine in these? I thought Perkins was an old diesel engine company.

There is still one six car train in Uxbridge, on the siding second from J Sainsbury. It doesn't seem to look in too bad condition, however how it looks inside is anyones guess.
