I'd be interested to hear from anyone who knows what it was like to drive Metadyne stock. IIRC it was fitted to 1936 O stock, but left to wither on the vine after a while.

From my knowledge it was first tried on 6 cars of 1905 Met railway saloon stock. They were all motor cars and ran as M-M pairs. The end cars even had an altered front similar to the K-L-M stock. One car was equipped with the Metadyne unit. The trial was a success and the O stock delivered from 1937 also in M-M pairs begun on the District.
The problem was the current consumption was too high and trailers were provided to all the O stock units to make M-T-M. 19 spare M-M formations were sent to the Met and ran with the P stock. I believe the regenerative braking was only allowed on the Met north of Finchley Road.
The best book on the subject is the COP story by Piers Connor. Well worth getting. This explains all the problems and braking systems with the O/P stock and how complex it wall was (especially to convert to normal PCM)

The story is being retold in Underground News every month in the "The Distict Electric Train" series.
