Speed Control Signalling.
An early installation of Speed Control Signalling was in 1939 at Archway, Northern Line, when the line was extended to East Finchley. The Southbound Line from Highgate descended a 1 in 50 gradient before a 30 mph curve into Archway station. Two Timing Sections and three Signals were provided. At the first Timing Section, if speed was down to 40 mph, the first Signal would clear and at the second Timing Section, if speed was down to 30 mph, the second and third Signals would clear.
