The units that went for scrap today were 5006 (s) and as predicted 5179 (N). 5179 was indeed in service yesterday, judging by the amount of yesterdays newspapers etc left in it. A sad day for the underground. There was an S stock nearby too. We wondered if anyone would notice if we took the wrong train. ;D Shame, at least then passengers would still have a decent train, instead of spending an hour travelling to/from work in something with a cheap & uncomfortable atmosphere resembling a bendybus.

5006 suffered a large burnout on its 600v cables.
Far to expensive to repair, at this late stage. It was bumped up from 09/03/2012, whilst 5179 was down for 13/01/2011, a short stay of execution...

On the other hand, it is nice to travel on a train that doesn't bounce you all around the car. Also it will be much nicer for those in the city who travel short hop, as they will actually be able to fit on a train which has been designed for a modern metro system carrying over 3 million people a day. It will also be a bonus not to have to try and avoid the trailer car for fear of the compressors permanently damaging my hearing. Plus I will be very happy come the summer when the air con keeps me cool. Furthermore, I find the seats very comfortable personally and know for a fact that the interior fittings are not 'cheap'. Defensive? Me?!! ;D Without meaning to take this any further off topic (sorry admins), the 'A' Stock have been a very good and reliable stock but they are simply time expired. Yes the company could throw money at them to keep them going for longer but that would be a waste of money, a waste of your money actually. They are no longer fit for purpose and even with an extra heavy overhaul and another facelift/refurb they really wouldn't serve London in the way they have done for very much longer. Dont forget of course that to meet future demand the entire Sub-Surface Railway needs a new signalling system and that would most definitely be the 'A' Stocks final call!
