How many depots have A stock trains been sighted at in almost 50 years of service? I know Neasden is the obvious one; but I'm also guessing Ruislip, Ealing Common, Lillie Bridge, and Northfields have hosted them over the years.

Not sure Lillie Bridge has been used.

I published a photo of an A Stock in UndergrounD which was in Barking Sidings .. must check the date. All to do with training I seem to recall. It was June 1977! [/b] Of course A Stock has been seviced at New Cross! Wembley Park shed obviously does not count towards 'where hosted'.

To broaden the discussion, how many non-Met sections of line have they operated on over the years?

I believe the A Stock had "Hammersmith via Paddington" on the blind as delivered, was this really true? Certainly the R Stock did, even though they never ran there in service.

Wembley Park shed obviously does not count towards 'where hosted'. The A Stock in Barking sidings might have been to train Barking (Met) crews to work the stock before it went on the ELL.

I am 99.9% sure the A Stock didn't have "Hammersmith via Paddington".
The A Stock in Barking sidings was there for ELL crew training - I went on it (from Baker Street to Barking).
A62 Stock unit 5218 (the one with the air metacone suspension) went to Upminster on test in c.1976 - I was on that too and photographed it.

A stock has run on the Central Line for testing. I'll dig out the link to the thread when I'm on a pooter instead of sat in my local having a swift sherbet!

Not only for testing (Ruislip depot - North Acton) but also North Acton (reverse) to Ealing Broadway for transfer to Neasden (no Ruislip siding then! and no connection at Ealing Broadway now!).

On the tunnel sections? I very much doubt it Phil. They wouldn't fit.

And there was no "surface stock train detector" at North Acton either. The signalman was trusted (or may even have been "instructed" in some form or another) to keep the North Acton eastbound starter at danger during such moves.

Eventually this thread will be sorted into 'Unusual Places A stock has been'.

Fair enough A Stock didn't have "Hammersmith" on the blind, but have 4-car A's ever been on the Hammersmith branch?

Yes it did, but as far as I know, only as far as Paddington H&C on the occasion of the Centenary in 1963 (when reversing was still possible). I am not sure about all the way to Hammersmith, so have to pass on that.

As an aside, I like the reference, in the WTT extract that mrfs42 posted, to "Metropolitan Line "Amersham" stock, indicated in the Timetable pages as "A60" ". Hence "A stock".

Fair enough A Stock didn't have "Hammersmith" on the blind, but have 4-car A's ever been on the Hammersmith branch? Not to my knowledge. There were occasional trips to Edgware Road when the wrong stick was taken at Baker St. There was also a gauging run round the Circle about 1965 because I was at Acton Town when the unit arrived very early one morning afterwards with George Christie as the driver. He complained about his guard who was formerly the "signing guard", Wally Burrows. The unit had aluminium panels stuck on the sides to protect the body and it was just as well because there were scratch marks on it.

*A* Stock was the very first train I ever did any training on. One Sunday morning in Neasdon depot I was first introduced to the DBVIC on an *A* stock train " DBVIC, It'll trip off the end of your tongue by the end of the week" said the trainman's inspector to us green as Friday-night-on-the-tube puke guards. We had to open the DBVIC - Driver's Brake Valve Isolating Cock - and charge up the train line air. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing doing it, and no idea what would happen, or should happen after I had done it. What did happen was I was scared witless by the loud rush of air as I used a "spanner" to open up this DBVIC thing in the driver's cab. I was terrified the train was gonna blow up and it felt like the whole train was going up my trouser leg. Would this count as the most unusual place an *A* stock has been, between my legs?

There is a youtube clip of this too. Sadly they go round the 1959 stock car not the A stock!

Marylebone for the 50th anniversary of the Institute of Locomotive Engineers Any pictures anywhere? If you can access the library, there is a pdf of the exhibition on IMechE which has a (very) short article on the A Stock archive.pepublishing.com/home/main.mpx
