I know the proposed extension of the DLR to Dagenham Dock is on the back burner at present but has anyone considered an eastwards extension from Dagenham Dock? It would be a simple matter to extend the line alongside the Tilbury line to Rainham but it would not be much more difficult to take the DLR to Romford. If the line was continued to the eastern boundary of the Ford works and then turn north following the course of the Beam River it would be through open country without any major obstructions, there is even a convenient archway beneath the LT&S/District line between Dagenham East and Elm Park that can be used. By following the Beam River/River Rom the route is virtually clear of obstructions until Roneo Corner where the line could be put on viaduct for the last mile or so into Romford where it would turn east again still on viaduct to interchange with the main line station at the same level. It would also be possible to extend the line eastwards across South Street Romford and follow the course of the Romford-Upminster line.

I think it would be idea having the DLR in my hometown (Romford)

If it's not even going to reach Dagenham, it has no chance of going any further.
Surely the horse is better in front of the cart?.......

We can still dream. Seriously the only logical extensions beyond Dagenham Dock are northwards. Dagenham Heathway is quite narrow and will be a shoehorn job or involve a lot of demolition or tunneling, not viable on cost grounds alone. Rainham itself would probably not generate enough traffic unless it was projected northwards towards Hornchurch.

Given the nature of the DLR, it would surely they can't be too ambitious over how far it reaches.

Well this is it. Its all very well and good to see see it as Docklands-centric, but in the long term the logical move is to make it into more of a light-rail network for inner suburban London. As long as it has good convienient and quick interchanges with faster modes to the centre and elsewhere theres nothing stopping it picking up more and more routes given the necessary places to terminate, stable and accomodate staff. A nice intermediate mode.
Good find on Web Archive btw.

The vast Becontree housing estate was laid out with the intention of extending the LCC tramways to and through it, it was only the formation of London Transport in 1933 that put a stop to it. Longbridge road, Becontree Avenue and Valence Avenue still retain the wide centre meridian strip intended to accommodate the tramlines. A tramway system could easily be built using these meridian strips but connections outside the area might prove difficult today without resorting to street running through narrow and congested roads.
