Is it true that they were considering installing toilets and even a buffet car (!) on the Metropolitan stock for the Amersham extension?
I read this while surfing another forum... It was stated by a Metman... Is it the same one? It was dated some time in 2007.

Was it at the time when Met was still going to Aylesbury and there was no plan cut it short at Amersham?

According to the Metman that posted it was rejected due to space constraints.
I can understand that for the buffet car (tho' I'd have thought a mini-chocolate machine at one of the car might be good), but why no loos? It'd be very useful, to say the least; tho' it'd use up one of the seating bays, costing up to 6 seats per car (48 in all!), hence it's downfall...

Still, looking to the future, as the S stock is walk-through - there's an opportunity to run a trolley service to the seat ;D Somebody on the Central Line thread "Stratford Platform 3a" suggested hostesses to remind passengers how to tell their left from right when using dual side door opening so maybe the idea of trolley service on S Stock isn't so far fetched................ ;D

The one and the same! As soon as WW2 ended plans were drawn up to extend electrification to Amersham. The pre war plan was to convert most of the dreadnought stock into T Stock and run them with the 26 spare T stock motor cars. All T stock would then be converted to have through lighting controls and EP brakes! It all came to nothing and with tight economies post war new trains for the 1950s were decided upon. Mock ups were built in the mid-late 40s on two withdrawn T stock motor car chasis (one an ex 1927 MV car 2707 the other on a 1931 steel panelled car) with new bodies and air operated doors. Car 17001 was chosen as the final design. Prior to this all sorts of ideas were floating about. As electrification was further defered until 1960 alternative options were examined. This included the buffet car and toilet dismissed as a mere 'stunt' by LT seniors! There were other strange options such as diesel/electric tenders with a swap at Ricky!! ;D Thankfully in the end what became the A60 stock was settled upon. Initially 1952 stock could have been built but again progress was slow. Imagine if 1952 stock (or A52/M52 stock?) had been built? R stock was also proposed for the Met After 50 years I think it is clear that the A stock has been very successful and ultimately will probably (although not actually a Met Rly design) go down as the last in the line of the true Met trains.

After 50 years I think it is clear that the A stock has been very successful and ultimately will probably (although not actually a Met Rly design) go down as the last in the line of the true Met trains. I would hope so - much as I have a bit of an antipathy to the MET, the passing of the design into history should be commemorated. There's a curious observation made about the Amersham stock by (I think) one of the previous Lucasian Chairs...... Certainly one of the SCR lot. EDIT: I'll have to look through the notes I've got on the 25 Castello Close crowd.. Hmm.

Would the buffet car only been used on the services into the former "joint line" country? I just can't imagine a buffet car on the run to/from Uxbridge.

In the spirit of -pay-before-you-board, sell meal tickets from the TVMs at stations to buy meals from the trolley! ;D

AIUI. toilets were planned on all stocks somewhere around WWII.
One of the dismissal reasons given was that in tunnel sections the heat and smell would combine to a point that it would be putrid (not to mention disease) and that HMG already had 8 weeks off through the summer due to the same problem with The Thames.

Toilets are fairly common on open section stations and I thought that all Met line stations had toilets, excluding GPS and Euston Square.

How about a special hermetically sealed carriage for all the Big Mac,Subway,samosa,sandwich munching and Starbucks slurping passengers that pollute the system with smell and litter.

Toilet equipped stock has been used on the District Line. The Ealing Broadway/Barking/Southend service used special stock fitted with retention toilets. It was once common practice for toilets on railway carriages to empty straight onto the track, not a good idea on an underground railway.
