Hi all,
Before arriving at Southfields today, the driver made the following PA:
"Hello Ladies and Gentlemen just to let you know that the front 2 doors in the first carriage will not open. Please move to the rear doors to leave the train. Once again the front 2 doors in the first carriage will not be opening. This is because....well I can't really give you a reason, we've just been instructed to do so"
Why was this?
Edit: This was in a D Stock train.

The driver could have said "this is because we have an issue with the mirror on the platform being out of alignment" - that's what I said on Friday and it's the truth!!
When correctly berthed in the westbound platform we can't see the leading two doors, so the easy around it for now is to not open those doors. A notice in the booking on points gives a fix time of two days, so if it ain't sorted for tomorow.....

Oh right okay. Is it necessary to see all doors to see if people are alighting the train or boarding?

Basic safety (and common sense). How would you feel as a driver, if an elderly person or a young mother with a buggy got caught in the closing doors because you couldn't see the person. Rather surprised by your question.

Ah well thing is, at Southfields westbound, I think drivers can see people coming down the stairs and boarding the train. But yeah I agree - common sense.

Is it necessary to see all doors to see if people are alighting the train or boarding? The PTI (Platform Train Interface, or getting on or off a train to you and me) is considered to be the highest injury risk during any given journey. The PTI is the number one priority at all times. That's why LU, well any train operating company really, has gone to the expense of things like painting yellow lines on every single platform. It's part of the reason why we have extra staff on busy platforms during the peak hours. It's also why you get yellow line PA announcements. The last thing a driver should be looking at on lines with no in cab monitors is the platform mirrors/monitors - not the station starting signal. That's a rule book requirement. So, is it really necessary to see all doors? Bloomin' right it is!!

Sounds like you're trying to board the train when the bleepers are going! Not a good idea that.

When I was at Southfields on Thursday, there was a CSA on the WB asking if the mirror was ok. To be fair, I hadn't noticed an issue with it until she mentioned it, but once I looked I could see that it had been tipped so you could see a lot of roof canopy and not a lot of train. Of course, by then the doors had already been opened and punters had got off AND I was standing at the 'O' door talking to the CSA anyway. (Just in case, as I was in the process of berthing the train, I was checking for any potential issues on the platform prior to opening the doors, as I always do!!) However, thinking about it, the structure that holds the mirrors in place are a fair lump, how do they get moved in the first place? I doubt this is like getting in the car wrong and knocking the interior mirror with your nut, it must take a big thump to move them?

Quite glad really, didn't fancy taking a C stock down there in evening peak time and telling them only 1 set of doors is opening in the first car! Must've happened to some drivers, but I avoided it

One set?
It's been a while since I've touched a C stock but surely there are four sets of doors on DM's - with only the first two cut out via the switch, you still have two sets to open.
I must admit though, given the numbers that C's swallow up, I can well imagine it being a nightmare for all concerned.

There are four sets of doors on a C stock, but the end door cut out will cut out 3 sets.

And I thought you knew Southfields well ;D ;D It were fixed, I swear! ;D ;D But apparently some people still aren't happy! The notice at East Putney had disappeared, but the one at Southfields remained. I stopped there today for the first time since it was "fixed", noted I could see every door on my train so opened them all. Then low and behold on my way home, the one at East Putney was back. I expected more of you Colin.. fancy moving the mirror out of line again just so you could be correct on here! ;D
