I've visited the Isle of Wight for the very first time and on our final afternoon (my wife and I) spent a few hours visiting all the stations on the 8-mile line. To be absolutely honest the now 72 year old trains are looking tired, however all things considered they are in great shape considering their age. I spoke to some of the staff and they commented that its not the sea air that is the greatest problem, but instead rain that corrodes the plates under the passenger doors and subsequently they need replacement (in comparison the preserved 38ts cars on Alderney were scrapped due to their poor condition as, I understood it, a result of the sea air - they were replaced by 59ts cars). The ride is extremely bumpy in places (if anyone visits prepare to be bounced around), but instead of the trains being the problem, its the track that seems to be very uneven. Internally they've lost they're strap handles and the circular lighting bulbs along with the maple flooring (as part of the initial refurbishment when they arrived on the Isle... along with the 3rd rail for power). The fluorescent lighting strips remind me a little of the old R stock lights. Also the passenger doors are also prone to sticking and then slamming open/shut. What keeps them going though is the TLC that the staff give them... although one 2-car unit stabled to Ryde St John's is now a source of spares (has the name 'Raptor' in the destination window, but the unit number is unknown). I've uploaded the best of the images taken yesterday to my regular LU/TfL Fotopic site HERE.

Taken from the latest webchat on South West Trains, re the replacement of the 38's... www.southwesttrains.co.uk/archive.aspx?p=2Question: 94 I note that due to the economic recession, London Underground Limited (LUL for short) have withdrawn plans to replace the Piccadilly line 1973 Tube Stock with brand new trains. Some of these trains were earmarked to be extensively overhauled and refurbished to replace the existing Class 483/1938 Tube Stock on the Island Line in 2013; however, this is looking increasingly unlikely to happen, so what can we expect to happen to the Island Line trains? Will the existing trains receive a minor refresh with new non-slip vinyl flooring and improved cab bulkheads? Posted 25/08/2010 21:04:30 Answer: Our current intention is to operate the existing Island Line rolling stock until the end of our franchise in 2017.

The "This door is not for public use" notice is interesting. On the picture of the emergency alarm in the car, it looks like you can still see the remnants of the London Transport days regarding how to use it. Also, are there any DVD's for sale that feature tube stock on the IoW?

The track was shoddy when I went in 1998, doubt its any better now! Feel like they go quite a bit faster than 45mph at times...
They are clearly from a previous generation yet still are the quintessential tube train and still a pleasure to look at. Thank you for sharing Chris!

They've all got slight differences in livery detail I notice, suprised that 'Raptor' is the one being used for spares as it looks to be the most recently painted. I know they overhauled the final unit but then got flooded. Did thy just decdide to cut their losses? What of the bodys 001 north of St John's Road? Presumably this has been scrapped. Managed a few pics of 010 whilst there. If only I had a scanner...

This was taken in September 2006. We got this train a few days earlier from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin. When it started up I nearly went through the roof. You'll see what I mean if you watch the vid when the train starts up. The vid was taken, I can't remember where, Brading I think, but we had to wait for it to return from Ryde for our short journey to Shanklin. They move at a fair old click and one of em had dinosaurs for a paint job...............I love the IOW, and we often go there for a short breaks. Wish the railway went all around the island, but the bus service is excellent, albeit expensive..........

It's nice that there is at least one 38 on the IoW that still pays homage to its London days ("No Smoking" roundels, "London Transport" stickers, etc).

And here is the Dinosaur Train which came along sometime later while we were waiting for the other one to come back. It's got bats on it as well............

Also, are there any DVD's for sale that feature tube stock on the IoW? Yes; I bought a DVD entitled 'Going South - Celebrating 40 Years of Tube Trains on the Isle of Wight' whilst on the Isle of Wight last week. I bought it at Haven Street on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway; in fact, I'm watching it now! I took loads of pictures whilst on the Island, and the first batch are now on my Fotopic site. Anyone interested to have a look is invited to click here : ronfisher.fotopic.net/c1099919.htmlProvided the technology works, here's a sample picture : Clicking on the picture will enlarge it and take you to the others. At the moment, they are in the 'Stop Press!' collection which is where I put all the new additions to the site for the first two to three weeks or so. However, in due course, I shall transfer them to a new Isle of Wight Railways collection in the 2nd Gallery and you will then find them here : ronfisher2.fotopic.net/c1898137.htmlHope that they are of interest; more pictures will be uploaded as time permits.

Afternoon All, Over the last few days I have been putting the rest of my Island Line pictures from September onto my Fotopic site; I don't suppose anyone is interested to see them but, if anyone is, they are here : ronfisher2.fotopic.net/c1907221.htmlAnd this is the first one to give you a taster. Clicking on the picture will enlarge it and take you to the others : As usual, they are in the 'Stop Press!' collection for new pictures. In due course, however, they will be moved to the Isle of Wight Railways collection and you will then find them here with the others : ronfisher2.fotopic.net/c1898137.html
