While lookng for something else, I discovered that the "upstairs" station at South Kensington opened on Christmas Eve 1868. The station name was not at all prominent on the exterior (picture shows the station around 1890)

Why odd? In 1868 the country hadn't been taken over by the 'Festival of the Merchants' malarkey, as promulgated in a rather mawkish fashion by Dickens!

Would imagine paid holidays and anything other than Church and a slightly nicer meal on Christmas Day were beyond the reach of almost all the population at that time as well so the 24th was just another day.

Christmas Eve 1868 was the day the first section of the District line opened.
