Can DLR trains be coupled/uncoupled outside depots? e.g. can one unit of a 3-car train be uncoupled in e.g. Poplar platform and driven to the depot while the other 2 cars remain in service?

Why would you want to do that?

A few years ago it was proposed to run single units on the Stratford service late in the evening, but this was never implemented. I would think the idea is well covered in dust (and locked away) by now.

Why would you want to do that? There could be many possible reasons, including one of the end units becoming defective but this problem not affecting the other two; the traffic no-longer requiring three-car units; an event meaning that more capacity is needed than was known in advance (2 car could be made 3 car), etc.

In the event of coupling/decoupling, wouldn't there be a need to stick the excess/defective unit somewhere?
